Hmmmmm, I have been buying and selling cars most of my adult life, but this is the first X-Type. 2002 3ltr AWD. I wish I had taken a look here before buying it!! I viewed a very nice looking car with a mere 87,000 miles on the clock. It drove perfectly and was priced at only £850 was a steal. I decided to drive this around for a while it was that good.


After two weeks and a 1000 miles it developed a whine around 30mph/ I took it for an MOT and the garage commented on how clean it was. They did notice a small oil leak from the rear diff at the right hand drive shaft. I changed the seal and the oil level was not too low. I still sucked out the old oil and replaced it with fresh.


The whine was still there. To be fair the prop shaft looked pretty poor and as the new part from Jaguar was so reasonably priced, it became the next job to do. The old prop shaft was pretty knackered. The middle bearing was rough and the front joint had seen better days.


All replaced, so out for a test drive. 30mph and ....... away it whined


Well this is not such a bargain anymore. I am a little to old and unfit to have a go at replacing the transfer box on a pair of axle stands and crawling under on my back. So for now I will turn up the radio.
