So. Hi!
Ooops, hope you get those keys out to enjoy your new ride, welcome to the forum!
That doesn't sound like a good place for the keys. Make sure you check your timing chain tensioners as that is probably a plastic tensioner year and start looking into msking sure it is up to date on its maint. and fluid changes.
Congrats and get those keys where they belong. In the ignition!

Hello and welcome villa. Saw your post over on the xj8/xjr forum (newuser thread). As mentioned there, if you've got plenty of patience and some time. You can access behind the license plate with a coat hanger and may have some luck, be sure to push down on the lid to relieve strain on latch. It worked for me on an earlier occasion. Judging by the wear and tear around my plate mounting holes, I think I accessed through one of the two bottom slots. You would think the right slot would be the one. Of course if you fail, and your neighbors are better with a coat hanger than you, they may be driving your car. Another option, that's a win win, is to take your VIN to a dealer and order a new lock assembly for the trunk(I did as backup), it will come with key that will also work in the drivers door. I think it was less than $75, which was priceless at the time. It's not chipped though so it won't be any good for the ignition. Good luck!
