Newbie member needs buying choice advise
Hi all,
I'm buying my first Jaguar and have whittled down my options to either a 2006 XJ, 2.7d, 120k with full spec for GBP8,500....or a 2006 X-Type, 2.2d, 67k with basic spec for GBP5,500. Both with FSH.
I will be doing approx 120 miles per day so need a diesel (on my budget!)
I am a Brit living in Switzerland hence the list prices may seem a bit higher to what you can get in the UK (I guess less supply on the market here).
Which one would you recommend? For the long commutes, I am really putting comfort top of my priority list.
Thanks all,
Matt

Welcome to the forums Matt,
From a simple direct comparison, I would choose the XJ but, with a used Jaguar, condition and history is everything. High mileage is rarely a problem provided servicing has been carried out on schedule. A neglected Jaguar can prove very expensive.

The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for information on regular issues. 15+ year old Jaguars will need a lot of upkeep when used in such way. As with lots of miles in an old car you will be facing a lot of repairs in the first 6 to 12 months of ownership as everything that was about to go will rapidly go.
Make sure to budget for that.

Thanks for this feedback. I added a 1998 4.0L XJ8 into the options mix (higher fuel costs almost offset by cheaper cost of the car itself).
I will use for the car for 2, max 3 years, only before leaving Switzerland.
Trying to avoid being practical in my car selection. I'm sure an old Toyota would do the job, but with zero romance (in every sense!)

https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/jagu...?vehid=7202911 I'll be buying this tomorrow, can't wait...
Fingers crossed it's a good one, but I'm braced for some 'unpleasant surprises' down the line nonetheless.
I test drove a VW Phaeton earlier this week, and whilst the ride and spec couldn't be faltered, it was sorely lacking one thing - 'romance'. Some passion for driving. It was boringly uber-efficient, as daft as that sounds. Which brought me back firmly back to the Jaguar...
