Overdrive solutions
I've just had a very expensive rebuild done on my MK8 DG250 auto, but one issue (not a fault with the gearbox) still bugs me, as it has for the 35 years I've owned it. This is to do with the high revs while cruising. I know what's being shown is to spec, but it is irksome, perticularly on a long journey. At 60mph it indicates over 3000rpm, whereas my more modern XJL indicates around 1300rpm at the same speed. I don't expect the MK8 to do the same as the XJL, but I suspect the constant higher revs must have an impact on fuel consumption and engine wear. Has anyone come up with a work-around to help with this? I thought of changing the diff ratio, but this affects all gears, when I only need to modify top gear. Can an overdrive be put on the back of an auto box? Any other ideas? Thanks
