Please let me introduce myself.
Please let me introduce myself.
My Jagness started at a very early age of nine years old racing Jags… I’m now 63. My Pop had given me a whished for Christmas present, a toy Matchbook electric racetrack with two 1/43rd scale racecars; one a Corvette, the other an XKE! I let my best friend John race the Corvette while I had a permanent lifetime dibs on the XKE. “Corvette John” and I spent many memorable childhood hours reconfiguring the snap-together track and competing for the golden cup, an old shot glass that Pops had spray painted gold. That ol’ cup changed hands many times. As many of us have said, “Oh I wish I still had my old XKE!”
At 15, my Jagness started to evolve. Pop was called away on an extended out of town business trip. He left his new pride and joy, a brand spankin’ new 1962 Jaguar Mark II 3.8, in the garage with strict orders for me to be “in charge” and keep an eagle eye on it while he was away.
I took it to heart, and literally went to the heart of the matter. I sat in the driver’s seat and drove imagined race tracks, ran my hands over the finished wood, got under the Mack II and studied the chassis and suspension, opened the hood and marveled at that sexy engine. Mesmerized, I just had to see what was inside… “what was under those gleaming cam covers, oh, look at the chains, what do they do?”
Now, I was addicted to Jagness, I wanted to see the real heart of the engine, the pistons. Just as I was removing the head off the block, a taxi pulled up and Pops stepped out! Inside, saying to myself, “Ohhh… I’m so busted! I’ll be grounded for four or five years. Senior prom is out of the question.”
Pops greeted me with his big fatherly grin. Then dropped his suitcase and the clasp burst, and all his cloths fell out onto the garage floor. With a gaping mouth and bugged out eyes, he kept looking in disbelief at his pride and joy’s engine bay half empty, all the scattered parts, and then to me; over and over again, speechless.
After what seemed like hours waiting for the verbal explosion, he prefaced with a long-winded exhale, finally spoke, and softly said, “Well it looks like you kept an eagle eye on my Jag. The warrantee obviously no longer exists. Now you are “in charge” of putting it back together. Left his scattered clothing, walked into the house, and before greeting Mom, called my school principal and told him, “We’ve had some serious private family issues recently, and my son won’t be attending school for two weeks.”
Those were some of the best two weeks of my life!
50 years after my first Jagness had started, at 59 I purchased my first Jag that I had deeply lusted after for many years, a 1987 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas from a neighbor. Jagness was now embedded into my bones.
Two years ago, I added a burgundy 2000 XK8 to the stable and this year a jet black 1998 XJR. This is why my family and friends have knighted me Sir Jagness.
I’ve gained so much deep knowledge as a forum guest for many years and want to thank you all before I become a full member of this fine outstanding form of experts. I am humbled.
Sincerely,
Sir Jagness

Welcome to the forum.. your life story encapsulates what I think we all feel when we look and most importantly connect with our cars.. it is something so easily lost nowadays with families and lack of time. I had exactly that feeling for the brief time I had my XJ8.. it is something about Jaguars engineering and design that can just grab your attention in a heartbeat. It's one of those events in life - your first Jaguar - an event which you always remember..
Graham has pointed you to some areas of the forum that I suspect you likely already know well :-) There is a range of events often going on in your area, and if any of them are within range of you it would be well worth you going along.. it's a chance for you to put names to cars and faces, and just socialise with others that share your interest in what is almost a breed of car :-)

"Sir Jagness." I love it!
What a Delightful story! You don't say if you managed to get the car back together.
Welcome from ElinorB.

Thank you o1xjr, GGG, SteveSheldon, sklimii, Norri, and LnrB, for such warm welcomes.
GGG, I took your suggestion and created a Signature.
Elinor B, Yes! I did get my Pop’s 1962 Mark II 3.8 back together and running tip-top. It took a little longer than the allotted two weeks. I learned a heck of a lot and the experience lit the fuse to a lifetime of interest in anything mechanical.
