A return to the Jaguar World
Hello all,
It's been nearly 10 years since I sold my last Jaguar, and now I'm returning to the fold.
Around 20 years ago I'd originally started in the Jaguar community (in those days on the old Jag-Lovers eMail list) and ended up buying a 1982 XJ-S as my first car. Those who were around in those days may have seen some of my posts on the old eMail threads. I was fortunate enough to be friends with Bradley Smith and once rode in his XJ-S (I have a picture of me sitting in it and wish I had bought that car), was a regular attendee of the J-L picnics in New Jersey, and was one of the early adopters of what was at the time the Keisler 5-speed conversion, putting a Tremec TKO into the XJ-S (now sold by The Driven Man I believe). I worked at a Jaguar specialty shop on Long Island ("Just Jags" in Garden City) and owned 6 or 7 XJ-Ss total.
After about 10 years in the scene I sold my last one, a 1992 XJS V12 5-speed that I should never have sold, but oh well, it's gone. The past 10 years I've been spending more time around airplanes and have spent some time around some other cars and have enjoyed the variety.
However, there is and always will be something about Jaguars that is unique, and if you're reading this you know that already. Back when I was a mechanic we would get some XJ8s/Rs and XK8s/Rs come in the shop (although we mostly worked on S3 XJ6s, XJ40s, and XJ-Ss). The R variants were always a treat, and we looked forward to seeing them and working on them. They drove beautifully, and from the time I first saw one and read the XKR reviews in Car & Driver, I wanted one... someday.
Patience paid off, and preparation met opportunity and my wife's previous fun car (a 2003 Mercedes E55 AMG) was starting to get long in the tooth with 231,000 miles on it. I'd been planning on getting her a new fun car, but after a few issues with the E55 that have gotten it to the point where I didn't want her driving it anymore, things got accelerated.
I'd been looking at several options, and as luck would have it, I found a 2001 XKR for sale in the right color combination (black exterior and black interior) with only 59k miles on it. After seeing it and driving it I was impressed with the condition overall, the seller and I agreed on a purchase price, and I took delivery on Tuesday, then surprising my wife a few hours later. She was not expecting this at all, and is over the moon with her first Jaguar.
It feels good to be back.
