S Type new member
Hallo from Mid Wales, UK. My husband chose the car about 5 years ago. It is an early S Type V6 3 litre petrol SE automatic, and had done few miles in the previous few years. Bodywork appeared good so seemed it had been garaged. Paid too much for it to "Johnny Jag" knowing we were being ripped off! My husband really wanted a V8 but one the journey to view, a phone call came through that the V8 had been sold. Anyway, V6 a better choice from my point of view, bit more economical, a bit cheaper to insure. We both have motorbikes, so previous cars had been boring cheap practicals, sent to the scrappy when not economical to get through the MOT.
Jaguar fast enough - surprisingly responsive on kick back for overtakes. Soon found it was intermittently discharging the battery. Colin tried lots of different things, but after a while the problem came back. Had to buy a couple of batteries, not even rescued by trickle charge. Then he had the idea of fitting a battery isolator. Richbrook, online at the cost of £9.95. Used it ever since. Car only locks the boot, but I never leave anything of value inside. A towbar was fitted for towing my grass track sidecar, and any solo motorbikes needing transporting. It needed a small bit of welding for one MOT, and has had things you'd expect like track rod ends, brake parts and wheel bearings.
Until recently, when gearbox fault came up, and in drive it is only using fourth gear. Very jerky getting into reverse or drive. Local garage diagnostics said torque converter and solenoid fault, and they advised me to take it to a Jaguar specialist. They said it needed a replacement gearbox. Searching has brought up some other reasons, so just in the process of working out what to do.
