Default S-Type, too good to repeat?

My 2002 S Type (158,000) ran perfectly up until it met a guardrail last week. Thanks to the tank-like quality of this car, my son walked away unharmed but the care was a total loss. Geico wrote me a nice check and I just saw a 2003 S Type with 94,000 miles on it for sale. My question: was my S type a fluke? Other than a transmission cable that had to be replaced ($150), I never had a single problem with this car. Pretty good gas milage (averaged about 23 city/hgwy) no engine or electrical problems and no bearing problems like I've seen here. So, do I spring for the 2003 or just give up and buy an SUV (I also have a 2011 XF, so far, so good).

The 'modern' S-types were built by Ford (they owned Jaguar from 1998-2011-ish), who poured Tons of money into Jaguar, modernizing and upgrading the plant. In the process, they made all attempts to increase quality and exorcize Lucas, Prince of Darkness from everything that exited the factory. By all accounts they did a pretty good job.

Since the 2003 S-type will probably be virtually the same car as the 2002 you liked so much, you might as well give it a fly.

Welcome to the forum dw9489,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

With any used vehicle, reliability is going to depend very much on how well the PO has maintained it. There can be no certainty whether you'd find the 2003 better or worse than your 2002.

Follow this link S-Type / S type R Supercharged V8 ( X200 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the USA Lower Atlantic Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/usa-lower-atlantic-nc-sc-fl-ga-66/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome.

Graham has stated what we all know and try to follow.

Prevuious care, or lack of, will dictated how the next Jag behaves.

Both of mine had niggling stuff, but nothing I did not expect.

Service books were impecable, sad the srevice work did not match the stamps, all good now however.

I've only been here on the forum for 6.5 mos but from all I've read so far I'd buy the latest model I could afford .. For one I think it was 03 or 04 they went to the German ZF 6 speed that is a marvel of modern mankind in my humble opinion. There was a "face lift" along the way also.

There was a major technical and physical upgrade on the S-type in 2003 so they do NOT have much in common.

2003 and up are far superior vehicles.

Thank you, Mikey, I stand corrected.
