Should I consider a used XK
Hello--I am a total newbie here and not all that familiar with Jags, other my childhood recollections to "stay away from British cars". However, the first car I fell in love with was the XKE that came out when I was a kid in the early 1960s.
I happened to be browsing on a car lot recently and saw what looked to be an immaculate 2001 XK8 Convertible. It had about 40000 miles and the asking price was about $26K. This seems like a good price but, like I said, I really don't know much about these cars other than I have always liked the way they look.
How is maintenance and reliability of these things, and does this look like a typical price for that vintage and mileage?
By the way, if this should be posted elsewhere on the forum, the moderator should feel free to move it.
Thanks,
Doug

Hey seismic and welcome to the forum bro.
As for the XKE / XK8 I can't really be of that much help, but I'm sure that there are others out there that can be.
Good luck
Jim
Hello. I had also posted this in the XK8 section and got one response that basically said "run away and don't look back" while another said that these are not all that bad.

I haven't checked it out the thread . Well, then google XK 8 to read some reviews on it . I don't know if nikasil issue can be associated with XK either .If yes then stay away from it .Being a '01 the chances are almost nit you will get a lemon one
I take it that "nikasil" is some coating that is used on the cylinders and possibly other engine components? I had not heard of this but, then again, I have never researched Jags. So if nikasil was a bad thing, when did they start/stop using it?

I think the stopped using it sometime in 99, so 2000+ vehicles should be fine. Pass by the XK8 forum and check out what I found for you. Go to yahoo.com and do a quick search for Nikasil and Jaguars for more info.

The XKE was a car I loved as a kid, but they were less than stunning in the reliability and mantenence side. I think the XK8's are like any jaguar, they do require you to be on top of maintenence. Besides a nice north american v8 would be realy cool in an XK. Hmm...
I'm pretty sure the AJ v8 engine in all 8 cylinder jags was designed and built in england XJ40ish. It's not the same as the v8 engine in crown vics or mustangs, it is more powerful, and I'm pretty sure from England.
