transmission fault and others
2000 XK8; After alternator overhaul and battery replacement a variety of codes and fails. Car was running great then started to miss P3003 and P 3006. A friend suggested a possible loose timing chain tensioner. I changed oil and filter and used 10-40 conventional oil...(ambient +- 85F) No miss, cleared codes...no codes. Transmission lever does not respond to positions on left (2-4) of J pattern. Does not downshift for hill retard. While driving up a slope, went in to "transmission fault" and limp home mode. restarting engine made no difference. very hard engagement of reverse. Once home, parked the car for 4 hours and it worked perfectly except for the shifter issue. I also have a parking brake "on" message and "check rear lights". Bulbs are all good. Parking brake is off and will not go on. ratchet at top of travel does not work. Cannot hear any possible EPB motor noise.
I suspect that these issues may be related. Any comments?

Welcome to the Forums.
The members in the XK* (X100) Tech Section will know.
I would be changing the trans fluid, maybe a few drop and refills, these "sealed" units still need a fluid refresh at about 50Kmiles.
Good luck.

welcome to the forum - enjoy!!!!
Sounds like parking brake is stuck on - pull up on handle and depress button, then try to release (may take a bit of force when pulling up).
As for check rear lights - most likely the faulty ground lead at the terminal block going into the light assembly - do a search on the XK8/R section for "check rear lights" - easy $3 fix
How many miles on car and has transmission been serviced ever? While the transmissions are touted as sealed for life - they are not and fluid/filter should be changed every 50000 miles. These transmissions also are prone to failure of the A-drum - can be rebuilt

Welcome to the forums Freebob,
That looks like a typo for P0303 and P0306. which are misfire codes. Timing chain tensioner issues cause considerably more dramatic and usually terminal consequences.
The XK8 doesn't have an EPB. It's entirely mechanical.
