Welcome to the forums MaineMunky,
That isn't a VIN. The VIN system has 17 characters (combination of digits and letters) and Jaguar vehicles all begin SAJ. Prior to 1981 Jaguar used several different Chassis Numbering systems of which that could be an example. If you post a photo of the vehicle, I'm sure we can identify the model and a photo of the engine will help to add further details.
