Cool X vs S Buying this week

Hi I'm looking to buy a Jag this week. I don't know which I like better though. Here are the two cars:

2004 S-type w/ 40500 miles $13000

2005 X-type w/ 43000 miles $13000
w/Extended Jaguar Certified warranty till May 30th, 2011 or 100k miles

From hearing about Jags breaking down a whole lot, I figure If I go with the S-type, I'll need to buy an extended warranty which costs $4k for 4 years or 75k miles, but i can pay 180 for 18 months interest free + $500 up front.

I like both.. I don't know which to go with. I really don't want to pay anything monthly.. I'm already going broke spending $13k for one of these. Especially after taxes.

Can everyone please give me some suggestions of why one could be better than the other? I'm looking for any decision point. I'm probably leaning towards the X-type right now because its cheaper.

For the design wise I would go for the X but the S is an upper class you know . Whatever you pick up I hope you will be satisfied with your decision

Welcome. This is my opinion. I would go for the S-type. Have you driven them? The S-type was a shared rear drive only car with the Lincoln LS. The X-type is a spin off of the Ford Mondeo (Contour in the US, but that was the generation before). So it is basically a front driver, with front drive dynamics. It did get a transaxle and diff to make it awd. All wheel drive was standard in the US and available in other markets. I personally have driven a few x types and did not like them very much.

^^ the short version, from a mechanic viewpoint

I think the s-type has a little more refinement to the design, very classic looking. It is not, however, as sporty as the x-type. touch choice.

I would personaly go with the S. Better looking, better performance and more options. I have seen some very slick ones on car domain. You should check them out.

Ok, if we're talking the type 'r', you got me there...you'rs will sport the x-type till next tuesday, but unfortunately, his option is a plane model, so to speak. I'm not even sure if the 2004 s-type he's talking about is the 4.2...but i'll bet he is. Hey, it's enough Hp for me. What I wouldn't give to try another 100 though.

3.0 engines in each... I think I'm gonna have to go with the X-type just because of price.. I haven't tried to bargain him down yet from $13k.. I'm hoping he'll take $12k. I'm 23, so the S type may be too much style for me right now anyway.

Age isnt an excuse! I just turned 23 myself this past Saturday the 21st. I got my S Type R for my 21st birthday roughly. A few of the other R owners are also youngins like us.

I dont blame you for wanting a warranty, I wouldnt buy one without it either. Even though the 3.0 is in both to me the S is much better driving because of the RWD layout and different transmission that seems to work the engines power band a lot better. Id shop around for warranties more if I was you, i think your price sounds VERY high by $1k-$2k.

Have you tried looking outside your local search area? I flew to Texas to buy mine, first long distance car buying ive done and I would do it again in a second.

Hope this helps!

I live in long island, NY. Insurance for an S-type R would be about $4k per year for liability only.. For the 3.0L (liability only) its $100/mo. So spending more for a car I can't even get full coverage on isn't worth it. Also, I take the train to work everyday. I sold my corolla this past Sat and I'm driving to Baltimore, MD this Monday.. I thought about flying somewhere and driving back, but it's too risky in case I don't make it back in time. Who knows, maybe in a year or so I'll do that. Either way I need to wait till I turn 25 so my insurance rates go down. (BTW besides just living in NY, my brother got into a small accident in Dec. with my corolla which affected my insurance rates by about 15%)

Thanks all... I'll be posting more often once I'm a Jag owner. I'll let you know Sunday when I hopefully have the X-type.

I've had the bare engine block to my X on an engine stand. After diving into this car as far as I have, I can honestly say I would never reccomend buying one to anyone.

If the S-type appeals to you, go for it.

Peels... I'm from Jersey (pronounced Joisey ) and I feel your pain for car insurance. Have you shopped around lately? I was pleasantly surprised when I made a few calls. I had Geico for years and progressive ins was 40% cheaper even with a few marks on my license (stupid bike gets me in trouble).
Try it you got nothing to loose as almost every ins company has different set of checkpoints, so you might get contrasting quotes from different companies.
If you have then as someone said "wait till you turn 25"
