Default XJS V12 fire - avoided

Hello all, I just about commited suicide a 1/2 hour ago when I re-installed the AAV valve on my V12 and started the engine... I saw fluid spurting out and thought that the water seal for the AAV hadn't sealed properly... I got out of the cockpit (cigarette in hand) and looked to see if the leak was coming from the AAV. I noticed a stream of fluid in the "V" and then realised #A4 EFI hose had split wide open. I shut the engine off and got out of the garage. After I extinguished my cigarette, I went back in and saw that a "lake" of gas had been pumped onto the garage floor (in ~30 seconds) on the passenger side. I'm letting the gas evaporate now. I don't have any spill containment, but it is drying up (evaporating) thank goodness. It was a miracle that the engine did not start on fire. I know these EFI hoses need to be replaced every 5 years at most, but I just got the car and the hoses were supple; I figured they would harden and crack before they leaked. NOT THE CASE. About a gallon and a half of gas on the floor in 30 seconds. Yikes. These things are dangerous. But I'm hooked.

Ouch Machinehead,
They say that a lit cigarette won't ignite gas, but hey I'll leave that test to someone else!
You were lucky to notice something was up and it could have been VERY DIFFERENT if you had not cut the ignition.
Enjoy your quest but please...... Stay Lucky

Welcome to the forum Machinehead,

That was a close call.

Follow Norri's link to the XJS section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues. If you post your list of codes in the X-Type section, you'll get advice on causes and fixes.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the forum.

Graham
