~ Jaguar S Type 3.0 V8 ~
Hello Friends
I am very happy to have joined this fourm with so much information and having such a wonderful car. I had no idea how much power this Jaguar can punch out.
I have one question, my logbook says that its a 3.0 V8, the engine has V8 cover and it has 4 spark plugs each side so it must be a V8, but I cannot find anywhere on the net that Jaguar ever made a 3.0 in V8.
The seller told me that its a limited edition and very hard to find.
I just wanted to ask if anyone could verify this for me and what BHP this engine would produce.

Welcome to the site. There's no such thing as a 3.0 V8 S-type. The 3.0 engine was actually a V6 and is quite common. The V8 came in 4.0 or 4.2L displacement. The 4.0 version had approx. 280HP.
Sorry, yes its a 99 S Type with Bentley style grill. The seller said that its a limited edition and very few where made V8 3.0
I will check the log book again.
No matter what the seller claims or what's written in the logbook, there are no Jaguar 3.0 V8s. Could we see a pic of the car please, not sure what a 'Bentley' grill is. If it's a wire mesh type, it's probably a service replacement piece from a newer S-type that was first introduced on the S-type R model.

Here is a link to another site that has the 99 UK sales brochure to view...

Despite what the seller told you, there were no "special editions" for 99. That was the first full year of the modern S Type therefore there was no need for a special edition to spark interest (that's what car companies do as a model ages). What you have is a 4.0V8 car. Now, how common the V8's are in the UK I don't know.. In the US they are not uncommon in the early years. But, we do tend to have more V8's.
Now in later years, as gas got more expensive, and price point was important, it seems in the US that the V8 cars became rarer.

Your engine produces 282 HP.
Hopefully the seller didn't extract too much $$$ from you by making you think it's a rare model. There are many threads about the 4.0 V8 engine you might want to familarize yourself with, especially the tensioners, which are a very common fault with this engine.
You should ask the seller if the tensioners and chains have ever been serviced.
Good Luck and welcome (If you haven't done so already you should post an intro in the new members section and list your vehicle in the signature line)
So long as you didn't pay a heavy price, be happy. The 4.0 V8 is great. But... if there's a chance it still has the original or even 2nd gen tensioners stop being so happy (sorry). They're prone to fail and will write off the engine. Plan to replace the tensioners at least (and the other parts that make sense while it's apart). There's a great write-up by tdc in the FAQs.
Hello Everyone and Thank you for your valuable replies. I dont mind if its 282HP because everytime I accerate it makes me smile.
I paid £2,500 for it. Its a '99 Model but got 106,000 on the clock. Should i get the tensioners put in?
When I bought it, the car would not go in Drive and I had to put it in 4 or 3 to get it started, but I took it to a Gearbox specialist and he told me that the "Lock" had fallen off. He aligned the gears and put in a "Lock" now it works perfect.
Its a very smooth ride no problems whatsoever and for someone who only does 100 miles a week for pleasure only its just perfect beast to keep.

Great looking car! It still looks strange (to us in N. America) to not see a leaper at the front of the hood/bonnet but the badge and type-R grill combo is very attractive too.
Have the tensioners checked and replaced if there is any doubt as to their condition or history.

Enjoy the ride...Did the seller mention what was "limited" about it, just that it's a 3.0 V8 which included the Bentley style grill?
Tax and Insurance both go by Logbook and log book says that its a 2995 Leter Engine so i am paying Tax and Insurance for a 3 Leter car.
Now I know its a V8 because its got 4 spark plugs either sides and 4 exhausts on either side going to seperate silencer pipes.
Also, even though its a big and heavy car, I have never driven a car with so much accleration from 0 to 60.
It was doing 2000rpm at 80MPH and as it can go up to 8000RPM i recon it can easily go over 150MPH.
So its Engine, grill, the Break lights and indicators were all dark colour ( I didnt like the back lights to be black so i bought normal onces and put them in myself (but i kept the black lights just in case)
