Default 01 S-type transmission works fine in manual problem in automatic

Hello,

My 01 S-Type has a transmission issue that when you shift to drive in the automatic mode, it will take a long time to engage (as in 15 to 30 seconds) and when it does, as you pull away it will frequently shutter.

I can't tell if it is going in and out of gear or if it is having trouble shifting between gears. As a matter of note, it never has trouble shifting into reverse.

Anyway, under the same conditions, if you go directly into manual mode it engages without hesitation and does not have a shutter.

I have taken it to a dealer and they tell me that they don't repair transmissions, they only replace them. They told me they reloaded the software but nothing changed.

I am of the mind to think this is an electronic or computer issue because when you shift into manual it works fine. Does any one have any ideas?

I would look into the known issue with the valve bodies on these. Good news is it isn't all that expensive to repair or replace.

Agree with the "known issues".

Down here i have gathered info since purchasing ours some 9 months ago, and the following is what happens down south.

Control modules, common on the 5 speed, so I am told.

Stale fluid, as in, never been changed. Oils/fluids need changing, and "sealed for life" is no reason not to service it. Many thousands of threads on that subject all over the www, and NOT just Jaguar related.

Gear select cable adjustment, apparently a bolt/s come loose, and selection is not as it should be.

So far on ours the only above I have applied is the fluid change, as in 4 "drain and refill" in the 9 months of ownership, and the sweetness of the trans is dramatic, as is the "R to D" time delay. It was a few seconds, now much quicker. Not as quick as the X300 (4HP22), or the XJ-S (TH400), but quicker than the S2 XJ12 (BW12), which gets there eventually, but its old, like me.

My suggestion, for what its worth, would be to drain and refill that trans. The fresh oil will "clean" the valve body, eventually. If you want instant results, then other methods are your choice.

There is no control module. The Ford 5 Speed is run by the PCM.

The shift solenoids and valve bodies are known problems.
Go to a transmission shop. You have a dead common Ford transmission.

Yup... My thought is a failing spring is causing a delay in pressure build up...so, when using it manually you are switching valves manually instead of letting the "pressure build"... classic valve body spring issue.. and yup any good trans shop can change out the valve body relatively inexpensively.

The module & loose bolts are the other autobox (ZF 6HP26).

Just about could be a stretched shifter cable but the spring/solenoids are the usual culprits. Trans shops should know lots about the box as it's common. Also a few DIY posts in the stickies here.

Thank you all for your great responses. Is it true that transmissions drain in the opposite direction down south (bad joke but I couldn't stop myself).

My biggest problem might be finding a good tranny guy. They seem to be hard to come by.

Thank you again, you have given me a good direction to go in.

I cannot resist also, fun all round.

I drained the diff oil last night on the X300, and forgot about the direction of drain rotation, and got an arm full of diff oil, fair dinkum, that stuff stinks, and will not wash out.

Same issue down here with tranny shops, very skinny on the ground, and those that are around hate Jags, and only do trans replacements, lazy bas&&rds.

I second that smell. You cannot take any clothes you wore into your home or near by. And do not even try to wash them. Took them to a Wash and dry place and even then the smell was still there. Had to throw my clothes away.
