Default 01' Throwing itself into neutral

Hello -

Im sure this has been covered somewhere previously, I apologize, but I had no luck finding related items. I have a 2001 S-Type with 68k. I have realized that 10% of my normal stops, at a light or stop sign, vibrate as the car from what I believe is trying to go into first. On top of that, just about every stop that is made quickly in a short distance, throws its self into neutral once the car stops moving, sometimes shutting the engine off and displaying the red battery symbol. The car shifts hard every now and then, and not sure how to say it but it seems like the gear box has quite a delay. Runs like a champ most of the time, are these signs of a future transmission replacement?

Shorter version: car goes in to neutral during quick stop, sometimes dying

Thanks for your help, Vinny

Check battery, may need replacing. Get a hygrometer from most any auto parts store and check each cell.

I would also check the shift linkage cable to ensure free and smooth operation...

I'd consider checking fluid level, but not sure why it would die in neutral unless you have some non-trans fault. Failing O2 sensor, maybe. Air leak, maybe. Or something else. You'll be lucky to get a code if it's a marginal issue as it seems to be.

Thank you for the timely responses. What is the best way of checking the shift linkage cable? Is it something that I am capable of doing on my own, I'm definitely mechanically inclined, just lacking resources. Do you think it is better to just bring it into the shop? It's an intermittent problem, and hard to re-create though.
