Default 1999 4.0 v8

Hey guys im begging for good advice. My 1999 4.0 v8 S-type is making this akward ticking sound apon startup. Last for about 3 to 5 seconds then quiets down. Motor has been done over top to bottom about 7000km's ago. Been serviced with 5w30 megnatec fully syn less then 2000km ago and Mann filter. This is realy a headache to me as that sound was never there. It is kinda loud through exhaust aswell end in engine compartment more to the left middle of engine. And sounds pretty load if you listen from underneath. Its only for that couple of secs and then nothing but it was'nt like that so don't want it there. Can anyone mabe relate to this and come up with a plan besides thicker oil.......

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

The big thing to worry about: tensioners & guides etc for timing chain. Have you had them changed?

If not, your engine is on borrowed time

Hey there yes everything has been replaced on that car. It cost me a R93 000 to do the engine. Everything is brand new.

I can't speak first hand, but I understand these symptoms to fit a tensioner problem exactly. Considering the potential consequences, I would inspect under the valve covers right away.

Do not want to offend, but I find that "everything has been replaced" is really difficult to believe. I have no idea what "R93 000" equates to . . . is that a significant amount of money? I suggest you list work that has been done . . . and do pay specific note of the well known issues advised by JagV8 in post #4.

Best wishes,

Ken

It'll be South African Rand so about $7.5K US.

It would be good to know exactly what was done to the engine.

Hi guys. It is alot of money but also undertand our situation in SA. A 5L can of magnatec 5w30 cost about $60 on a good day. So everything here is super expensive. Anyway to answer your question.
the tech gave me a breakdown and it included the following.
Oil pump
Pistons
cams
Chains
Trnsioners
Plugs
All filters
All fluids
All sensors.
Rest is engineering and labour.
Hope this helps.

Oh and one more thing. What is thr chance of my problem being exhaust related? Reason im asking is that apon 1st startup in morning, it makes this reali loud rumbling sounf trough left exhaust pipe. I can't imagine that a tensioner would cause that. As soon as the rpm settles down the noise also quiets down. Wanna take it to a exhaust shop this weekend.
regards and thanx for all your awsome replies......
