Default 1999, 4.0 v8, failure to start after battery replacement

Please help, I have an S-Type 4.0 v8 and last week had a battery drain problem and discovered the earth lead had split. Taking no chances I replaced the lead and battery now the car will not start. I have checked all the fuses and relays all ok, fuel pump clicks, car turns over, dash lights go out when in no2 position. I have even resorted to to trying oil below the spark plugs and still nothing. I am now at a loss. Any help, advice or of a mobile mechanic in south devon would be great.

You should hear the fuel pump run for about 2 seconds. If your only hearing a click - that is more than likely the relay your hearing for the fuel pump.

Odds are your fuel pump is toast. Check fuel pressure at the rail. Should be at least 41 psi when turning the ignition to run.

Anything less - look at the fuel pump.

Thanks Abonano, Having replaced the pumps and filter it still will not start. The only other thing to mention is that when the car turns over the fuel gauge drops back to empty but I have two thirds full. Not sure what comes next

I forgot to mention - proper protocol is to post a brief intro in the new members section of the forum. Regarding your no start issue - back track your work with replacing the fuel pump and jet pump. Ensure they were seated correctly in the tank.

The fuel gauge shouldn't go back to empty upon turning the ignition.

Finally, check the inertia switch under the driver's dash panel - make sure it is depressed.

All work double checked and all working. Inertia switch depressed but still the fuel gauge drops off when trying to start. It was doing this prior to pumps and filter changes. still no joy

Still sounds like a power problem. (Bad repair or dying battery or whatever.)
