HI, I have a 2000 Jaguar S-TYPE V8 4.0L.
The car seems like it's trying to turn over but it just keeps making a weird sound(zzeehuuuuuuuuuuu), like something is stuck or something.

I was thinking maybe the Starter?
The battery seems to be working fine the horn,radio,lights work perfect
any thoughts?

are you sure its not cranking ? could it be bore wash ? that makes an engine crank faster and sound different.

 

How do I check that? It sounds like it is cranking like repetitively?

 

is the serpentine belt moving as you turn the key ?

if it is bore was, basically fuel rich mix left in the cylinders when switched off gets past the cylinder rings and washes the oil from the cylinder walls (hence bore wash) this means it can't build any compression in the cylinders as it is the oil with the rings that makes the seal.

It most commonly happens when the engine has only been running for a few minutes from cold then switched off.

With no compression it won't start and turns over more freely due to no compression. (making it sound like the starter is not engaging)

The good news is its not broken.

To start it you need to turn it over with your accelerator pedal flat to the floor, this is known as wot (wide open throttle) when at wot NO fuel will be fed to the cylinders allowing the oil to recoat them and the rings.

The bad news is it can take 50+ tries

Only turn it over for 15 to 20 seconds at a time making sure the accelerator is flat to the floor. Let it rest about 10 seconds between turnovers.

After a while you will hear and feel it start to catch and cough, when this is happening have the accelerator pedal 3 quarters of the way down and it should catch.

You might want to fully charge your battery.

The other way round it is to remove the coils and plugs and squirt a big table spoon of oil into each cylinder, I have not had to do that as I have found the cranking with wot works.

 

Thanks so much it worked. After having my jag sit for 6+ months she started up. It feels good to hear her purr again. Thanks so much!!! Now only if i can figure out why she goes to the right when driving at 60+ she would be perfect.

you probably need a wheel alignment but get underneath first and check nothing obvious is wrong.

[Hello, I wanna say thanks to police666. I was having the same problem with my jag. It would only click when I tried to start it after it set for about 8 months. I was about to have a new starter installed so As a last resort I tried the advice that you gave to someone and it worked. It took me maybe 25 tries.Thank you so so much for that info.

Once a Jag has lost compression. How do you 'rebuild' that compression?

Basic ideas:
1. do not add more fuel (*)
2. do add oil

(*) washes oil away and also once flooded the engine won't start as the mixture is far too rich

For #1 if you crank then you also need WOT (see my sig).
For #2 you either remove plugs and add oil or crank multiple times till oil seeps and smears where it needs to be. You may need to recharge battery. Don't crank for too long without short rests or you may burn the starter motor out.
