Default 2001 S-Type 3.0L Cabin Heat Problem

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I had a coolant leak caused by a split in my expansion tank. After repairing and refilling and bleeding the coolant, I found that my heating had stopped working in the cabin. The temp gauge shows normal running, all fans etc seem to work properly. I have read many threads and that prompted me to try the following:
- I removed all hoses from the heater core, attached a garden hose and flushed it through. Water ran fine through all three pipes. Re-assembled, still no heat.
- I removed the heater control valve, disassembled it, valves were stuck, cleaned, freed and lubricated, re-assembled. Still no heat.
- I again removed the heater control valve, disassembled it, removed the internal sleeves to make it free-flow to the heater core, re-assembled it. Still no heat.
Each time before testing, I fully bled the system, let the car get to operating temp (drove it round the block to warm it up and remove any bubbles as well as using the bleed valves) so I know there was coolant in the system.
I'm running out of ideas. I've thought about the thermostat, but there's hot water running round the system to the radiator and expansion tank.

Any recommendations as to what to try next would be greatly appreciated. Winter is nearly here and I drive an hour each way to work.

Thanks.

If you are 100% certain the valve is now open constantly my money would still be on an airlock.

Thanks very much, I'll double check. Also, for the sake of $7, I'll replace the thermostat as well, just to rule it out if nothing else!!

Well, I changed the thermostat, the old one looked really worn. Have done everything I can to re-bleed the system completely. With the heater full on (a/c off), there may be a trickle of heat coming into thr cabin now, I'll know for sure in the morning on the way to work. Of the three hoses out of the HCV, the wide one was red hot with the other two luke warm.

Has anybody got any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

Sleathy,

I've moved your thread to the S section where it should get more attention.

You should have the five hose DCCV, I think the two small hoses are the supplys to the heater cores, if these are not heating something must be stopping the flow.

Thanks very much for moving the thread.

This morning, there is now heat getting in to the passenger side, albeit a trickle. With the CCM set to recirculate and a/c off, I got enough heat to make the cabin bearable.

Definitely a step forwards, but still some way to go.

I have to figure out how to increase the flow to the heater core further.

Thanks for the continued support.

Hi Desert Dad,

If you haven't found it yet, the thermostat is inside the aluminum housing that's located between the front of the engine block and the radiator fan directly under the plastic air intakes. It has three hoses going to it. Two are about 1 1/2" diameter and the other's slightly smaller. The easiest way to get to it is to take off the black plastic air intake between the intake manifold and the airbox. Then just undo the three spring clips, ease off the hoses (may need something to help release them). That will get you the housing off. There's two bolts holding the housing together. Undo these and it will split in the middle (will probably need some friendly assistance from a heavy object). The thermostat is in there.

Good Luck!

What about the heat Sleathy?

Maybe engine details in your sigs for you and DD might be useful?
