2001 S-Type 8cyl Alternator Help
My daughter's boyfriend has a 2001 S-type 8 cyl and he was just quoted $800.00 to replace the alternator. He is also a poor college student and I trying to help him out. The part can be purchased from Advanced Auto for $155.00 plus core charge. The work will have to be done in the parking lot of his apartment complex. How difficult of a job is it? Does anyone have a diagram of the belt? How do you loosen the belt to get it off the alternator pulley?
Thanks Joe
Thanks Joe
Belt path is in Vehicle Spec PDF in HowTos (there's a spring-loaded tensioner so you just move it the right way, don't unbolt it). Also get the free workshop manual JTIS.
There's a writeup of changing a 3.0 alternator I suspect, again look in stickies, but JTIS will have the main details either way.

Welcome to the forum, Joe. I'm not certain, but I believe you'll have to drop by the new members section and make an introduction, which will snag the attention of one of the mods who will then upgrade you to full status once you've hit all the wickets (Intro, Post count to 10, etc.) in order to access the fine tools John is referring to. Again, I'm not sure you will be prevented from downloading the pdf's etc. but I suspect so.
Meanwhile, tell the lad to steer clear of the AutoZone alternator lest he find himself staring at the red Batt light the rest of his driving career. It will bolt up and charge just fine...but it will light the batt light on the inst panel constantly. No! he needn't fork over $800 for a new dealer model. Get one from a wrecker, likely $85 or less, slap it on & go...keep the old one for when he finds a good old-time copper & iron electric motor man to have it reconditioned.
I'm not certain about the V-8, but on the V-6, the change is easy enough, but it is mounted on the bottom and he'll need ramps or a good sized curb to pull it up on.

+1 on all points.
If you or the owner are going to be working on the car, download and install a copy of the factory workshop manual:

If you can find a local shop to rebuild your existing alternator, that would be a good 'alternative'.
