Default 2001 s-type driver door key

Duh, probably stupid question: Just bought this used Jag, love it, LOVE IT, but the key that the dealer gave me (the only key) fits into the door lock but will not turn in either direction.
My dealer wants $144 to re-program the new key fob I bought so I hate to ask him about this door lock.

any ideas?
Thanks,
Gregor

Door lock starts out same as ignition lock & also trunk (boot) lock.

Try key in trunk lock.

If works, it's door lock that's been changed. If not, probably ignition.

Ideally you'd change and get back to all the same. Plus total 2 or more keys.

Default 2001 s-type driver door key

Thanks JagV8, perfect reply, I appreciate it. Yes, the trunk works as advertised and as you said so I either have a key broken off in the door or again, as you said, the lock has been replaced.

I will mention that when I insert the key in the door, it only goes in the length of the end piece, thats about 5/8" (estimate) and I wonder if that means there IS a key already broken off inside.

If you know that the key should go in further, please let me know. I do have an appointment tomorrow to get the KeyFob reprogrammed at the dealer (only $144, yeah, only)))))

Thanks again, I appreciate your time.

I remember a few threads that had the same problem.

I think some of the locks were tight or seized due to lack of use. A couple of guys got them working by using penetrating oil and slowly working the key in the lock to free it up.

Give it a try. Might work for you.
I have rarely used my key in the door after 8 years of ownership. I should try it again soon.

Worth doing - and the trunk (boot) lock at the same time.

Did you check around with a couple of key shops? Could end up being alot less pricey.

My '01 key goes all the way into the door, right up to the black plastic.

Thanks for all the help folks, and that picture (worth a 1000 words). Thought you might be interested in my day: went to Jaguar dealer, they said both my Fobs were bad and new ones were $400 EACH, and that the lock in the driver door had be changed out. So, if I went for a new fob, I still would not get in the door via key and if the fob screwed up with the car locked, I was pretty much out of luck. I left, called around to locksmiths and found one that came to the house, removed the lock, re-keyed it to my existing key and it works like a champ. I dont like Key fobs anyway, I am old school, so I live by key alone. He also threw in a second key that he has to cut. $200 TOTAL. I am happy! Thanks for all your inputs.

Don't be too quick to dismiss remote fobs. Picture this scenario: You're in a restaurant with your family, enjoying a meal, and one of the kids start acting up. If you're not seated too far away, you can unlock the car and tell the young miscreant to march himself out there and to wait in the car until you can deal with him later. I should caution this is only appropriate for one's own kids. If it was some other kid acting up, his parents may not approve of this tactic.

All seriousness aside, only the driver's door has a key lock. If out with your significant other, you will lose valuable JagPoints(tm) if you don't hold her door open first.

Default Another happy Forum user!!!

No issues, no kids!! My wife loves the car and can overlook me not opening her door. I never lock the car unless there are bags from shopping inside. They break windows to simply look in the glove box around here so I would rather let them open the car and look inside than wake up to a broken window. That's life in Jacksonville!!

Once again guys, thanks for the inputs, as JagV8 said, "Hooray, good results"
