Default 2003 instermint cluster question

Hello I am hoping someone has some knowledge about the instrument cluster lcd display and back light
on the wifes 4.2 N/A
I had sent her instrument cluster away to have cold solder joints Repaired
but something is still bugging me
Regarding the lcd display and back light
I was told they need Replacing
as it is hard to see the Warnings / mileage/ect
but you can read what it is saying but you need to move in close
I have emailed that many instrument cluster repair companies its not funny
Always get the same answer can not help or send it to us
But the shipping cost are extreme for example new Zealand to United Kingdom $230.00 one way or to United States
$250.00 one way
So dose anyone know if there are bulbs for the lcd display
or do I need to find a replacement lcd display

I do not have mine at the moment
But have taken some screenshots from the net
first screenshot is what mine looks like even with lights on
dark all the time

Second screenshot is what i thought it should look like
Thanking you
Darrol

I don't recall seeing one taken apart to the point where you could see the components.

Maybe you can find some internal pictures but maybe no-one has posted such.

Maybe you could buy an extra cluster and take it apart to see and even swap the relevant parts (anyone competent with a soldering iron might be up to that)?

Hi Rich here.
2003 S Type R 4.2

I have the same issue, but don't think there is anything that can be done.
Below is what I asked Grok, the AI engine:
Is there a knob or control for background light dimming/increasing for a Jaguar 2003 S Type R instrument cluster?

Yes. The 2003 Jaguar S‑Type (including the R) has a dash illumination dimmer — a small rotary/thumb wheel control you use to increase or decrease the instrument cluster/background lighting.

Where to find it

• It’s on the left side of the lower dash, near the steering column (to the left of the steering wheel, around the light switch area).

• It’s a small knurled rotary or thumb wheel you roll up/down to change brightness.

Notes

• If the dimmer doesn’t work (no change in brightness), common causes are a blown fuse, a failed rheostat/switch, or a wiring/bulb issue. Check the owner’s manual for the exact fuse location and designation before replacing parts.

• If you want, tell me what happens when you try to adjust it (no response, only works at one end, etc.), and I can suggest troubleshooting steps and the likely causes.

IN ADDITION
I think the labour cost/ effort of trying to replace any bulb in the instrument cluster would be an issue to consider.
I am wondering how much it would cost in labor to dismantle the instrument cluster just to replace the bulb, either with an old style bulb or an LED. It is painful to think about that.
  • Try the turning the dimmer switch as it might at least help with night driving.
  • Then, check the fuse.
Cheers, Rich

Hello jag v8
Thanks for the response
This is what I found out today
On the s type instrument cluster
The LCD display /message center is dim there are two
T5 2721 or 194 size wedge bulbs on the printed circuit board
for the LCD message centre backlight
But that is only if you can read the messages/ mileage
Like in first post
If you can not read messages or missing letters then the ribbon cable can be replaced
But this is where I'm not 100% sure i have been told this is the correct ribbon cable
But it looks different to one on my cluster
Also the two wedge bulbs either side ribbon are for
LCD Backlight

Thanking you
Darrol

Hi rich
Found out how to fix the dim LCD display
it takes two wedge bulbs
removing back off cluster is easy to do swap

my wifes car is right hand drive
The dimmer button is working as we can make cluster go dark or bright
Bur it is a little button you push in or our and turn
here is a screenshot of what ours looks like

Thanking you
Darrol
