Exclamation 2006 SType 3.0 Restricted Performance

My 2006 S-Type 3.0, has started sputtering when idled. Sitting at a red light in drive, it acts like it's going to cut off. Then a Restricted Performance light came on. I took it home a parked it.

It has 56k miles on it, had a tuneup less than a year ago. Can't remember if the battery has ever been replaced

Help, As a female I don't want to get stranded or took by untrusty mechanics.

This might warrant a thread of it's own. First thing is get to an auto parts store that will use their OBD2 tool to get a code / codes and get back. There are a few things that can cause a rough idle. Oh..and get that battery checked.. These cars really like good batteries.

You might buy a cheap elm327 so you can look at codes but especially so you can look at fuel trims. They will show air leaks (which often cause bad idling).

I see you're from Portland, Oregon. If you'd prefer to have a shop take care of your car, I've dealt several times with The Jag Shop (on East Burnside) and can recommend them highly:

Maintenance, Repair, Jaguar, Rover, Mini, Ferrari, Exotics, Portland, Oregon

Thanks so much for your responses.

Currently, I have someone working on it. Ran the ODB diag. and is looking at replacing the fuel pump.

How long do they usually last?

Now that my fuel pump has been replaced car is running ok, keeps getting check fuel filler cap and eventually a check engine light. I've taken it back to my mechanic 3 times now. He rechecked for leaks done a smoke test. After about 20 miles or a couple Starts the error returns. Help frustrated!!!!!!

Either DIY or get a better tech.

Use JTIS to see all the causes of the code - you might post it BTW.

My guess is that the fuel tank sender cap seals aren't in correctly, which could show as cap leak during evap test?

Go to the Jag specialist they should find it quickly.

The car is running well now, so that is progress. Don't be too hard on your mechanic.

Is the fuel cap message new? Carefully inspect the sealing surface on the filler neck, where the fuel cap attaches. It could be dented from contact with the gas station fuel nozzle. The smoke tester might still be able to seal properly, but not your fuel cap.

If there are no dents, I'd gamble on a new fuel cap.

Also, next time you get the check engine light, report back with the actual 5 character code. (Should be P followed by four numbers) Many auto parts stores will read codes for free.

Report the actual code. The root cause is almost never the fuel cap or filler neck itself, despite the wording.

Thanks for your replies.

The Code is P0456

Mechanic has checked the fuel cap sender seals

The cap has been replaced, fingers crossed
