Default 2005 S-Type 3.0 V6 – Rear Parking Sensors Inoperative

2005 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 V6 with approximately 95,000 km. The factory rear parking sensor system is completely inoperative.

There is no audible tone when reverse is selected and no warning as objects are approached. No message appears in the cluster and the system seems inactive. Reverse lights function normally.

There is some damage to the rear bumper, though none of the sensors themselves appear damaged. I recently purchased the car. I’m familiar with the 2001–2003 S-Type models, but not as familiar with the 2005 setup, so I may be missing something specific to the later cars.

Any guidance on common failure points, control module location on MY2005, or whether a single faulty sensor can disable the system would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried cycling the inhibit switch on the overhead console? IIRC, after the button has been pressed, the system automatically resets to the active position with the next ignition cycle, so this button may not be at fault. I think the button is momentary action and does not latch in, but perhaps it jammed?

Does the inhibit switch have provisions for a light? My '02 does. The little light turns red when the system is inhibited. Does this light ever come on if you play with the button? If so, make sure the light is off for any further troubleshooting.

There's one fuse for the parking aid system. Wiring diagrams are here, in the section at the top of the page:

JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Select 2005 and then scroll down to figure 18.1. Follow the power source back to figure 01.5. Check fuse F29 in the primary junction box. This is a small panel inside the cabin, just forward of the right front door hinge.

If the fuse is good, listen at each sensor for a high-pitched clicking sound. Details about how I checked mine here:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...cement-269327/

That was an '02, but most of the information should be applicable. Note my comments about how it can be difficult to hear and how I got around that. Since your system appears to be completely inop, you're not necessarily checking for a single dead sensor. You're checking to see if any are active.

If the sensors are clicking away, there's a good chance the speaker is dead. My experience with a failing speaker (very low volume) here:

Thank you. I was aware of the inhibit switch. The indicator is lit red and will not turn off, even after cycling the ignition. Pressing the button doesn’t change the state.

Given that, I’m assuming the system is being held in inhibit. I haven’t checked fuse F29 yet but will do so next. If the fuse checks out, would this point more toward a failed inhibit switch or wiring issue to the park assist module on the ’05?

I’ll update once I verify the fuse.

Hmm, good question. I’m thinking the red light gets power via the same fuse, but have no way to know for certain.

What if the switch innards are jammed in the inhibit position? Continuity at all times when it should only be momentary? Just thinking out loud. What if you unplugged the inhibit switch? If access isn’t too bad, that would be an easy way to rule out one possibility.
