'05 s-type, 4.2 - on my way home from work this evening and the Gearbox Fault light came on and it would not shift out of first. After getting the car home, I turned it off, restarted, the light did not return and it shifts o.k. - maybe a little balky, maybe. Is the fact that it was ok on restart indicitive of an electric versus hardware problem(i.e. torque converter) or am I looking at a major expense and if so, how much, usually?

Just purchased the OBD II reader Norri suggested, will read codes once it arrives, and see where I'll go from their. Going to check fuses once I get home tomorrow as I believe my gearbox fault issue is electrical because after I took it to an auto carwash one night everything went downhill from the next day till now unfortunately

Maybe a failing battery? Reading codes is sensible.

Just an idea.. it is very possible someone whom has worked on your car before you owned it was very aggressive with the wire connections while removing parts. Pulling on the wires to get connectors apart, stretching them beyond a reasonable point, bending and twisting them out of the way. Just an idea..

 

Car was owned by my grandfather and all work was performed at the dealer.

Coils were the only "electrical" work the car saw till I had to do the headgasket....by then all the wires were brittle...I think I need to post a few pictures

 

By no means every dealer (each is a franchise) is beyond reproach.

After the rain my 2005 jaguar s type 3.0 v6 went to restricted mood until removing the engine cover and pulled out one by one coil plugs on the left hand side of the engine. All 3coils was full of water clean and seal the area also cleaned the ecm connector take out the clogged muddy on the water drain cleared. The water got into the colis because somehow the round coil hole changes the shapes and coil does not fit properly after all that cleaning starts the car of restricted mood and show the gearbox faulty massage and rough changing stop and starting again that happened 3 times after my car was back to smooth mood try to clean yours
