2005 s type r - Reliablity?
Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about getting a 2005 s type r ( supercharged) as my next car.
I have heard horror stories ( and many) about jag quality and want to know the truth. Are they really unreliable? or is that all just some kind of weird farce?
Also, is 17,995$USD a good price for a 2005 STR with 55k miles and in very good condition?
Also, if you had any advice / info for me I would greatly apreciate it !
Thanks,
Tim.

Way too high a price. While I love my 2005 STR I got it because they are almost unsellable and are a very good value. I would not pay over $14K for your car. Check the completed auctions on EBay to see what they have been selling for.
They are very reliable and in 2005 were rated in the top three manufacturers. They have dropped a bit lately but I think it because of new models. The sweet spot for the S Type is 2005-2008. End of the run and by then Jaguar really knew how to put them together.

As with anything used and with 50K+ on it, you can expect some things to require repair. That would go for a Benz, a Beamer, an Audi, a Lexus, a Toyota, a Hyundai or a Kia. If buying from a dealership, investigate getting an extended warranty and pay that price no matter. That would assure you from getting it socked to you if something major were to fail.
Much will depend also on how well maintained the vehicle was before you take ownership. Like Michael Star says, there's nothing alarming I can say where the STR is concerned, in fact, it's all thumbs up. Do your homework and remember, you have a bunch of really knowledgeable people here that can help you should you require it. The reliability issues mentioned are mostly from Jag's of old. Engine issues where carbon was building up on the plugs resultant from driving 55mph instead of 120mph like they do many places overseas.... (wink)
Offering some advice that many auto enthusiasts of all types would say, however, I'll make special mention of my man Rick (Joyce's Jag), get yourself an OBDII code scanner. Should something go wrong, you can bring the data here and receive a plethora of knowledge and advice on how to proceed should it be necessary. I've found this group and I mean the entire crew exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, willing to share information and guide you to the best outcomes possible.
Most states offer a minimum of 30 days for a return (CT 60). I would put aside an additional 300 to take it to a reputable Jag dealership (should you be buying the car from a third party) and let them put it on their computer. They'll give you a printout of most things that need or might need attention. I said 300 but it's likely less in most regions.
You'll fall in love with the car because there are few that have the stage presence she does. I get looks in other vehicles I own because of the price people know I've paid. I get looks in my STR because it's downright Beautiful, sexy, appealing, classy and desirable.
I'm thinking about buying another so I can drive this one till the wheels fall off and, still have one for all time....

Hey Tim
I find the word farce kind of weird...lol
There are a half dozen parts that are known to fail...Four rotors and pads will cost $500 before labor...Quality tires will probably cost you $1000+...A transmission fluid exchange which is highly recommended by most of us costs around $350 just in parts...Bring the car to a mechanic, if there's a coolant leak make sure the source is located...There is the infamous under the supercharger leak which can cost between $500-$1000 (depending on the mechanics experience and labor rate)to fix...Another biggie is inner tire wear, especially if you're spending a $1000+ on tires, Jag updated the alignment specs and not all alignment shops have the updated specs...The specs are listed in this forums FAQ...Get used to searching the forum or get used to possibly spending lots of money at the mechanic if he's not familiar with the car.
Price is a little on the high side, especially if it's been in an accident, if it has navigation and other options such as adaptive cruise control, bluetooth, etc, obviously the car is worth more than with one without those options...Depreciation is bad and a lot of people are still upsidedown and may not be able to afford to lower the price much...

Timca333, ditto to all above...aside from the custom exhaust leaking forward of the cats (set off the CEL and Restricted Performance) which will be repaired this Thursday, my 03 STR runs fine. Otherwise, the 03-on "S"s are screwed together pretty good. After negotiating that 55k mile 05 STR down to $14,900, come join us.
Yea that is a pretty high price. I wish I could sell mine for that much. I'd buy another and another bike with the left over cash and still have some bucks to mod her back to where mine is now. A year and a half ago I paid 16K for my 05 with the same mileage as yours and I know they didnt go up in that year and a half in value to that much. So you should be able to get them to come down on that price. Unless it has some awesome warranty that you forgot to mention. Also if you are a DIY'er its not so bad for working on and they are pretty reliable. In my year and a half I've had the overflow tank break which was my fault from leaning on it to do a throttle body clean. I've done regular maintanence and I've had to replace my rear rotors because of warping one (hard to do unless you are driving very spirited through the mountains). Its of course gonna have its problems like any other car just got to make sure you get it looked over to make sure its all good now and you should be good especially since you found the best forums out there for the STR.

In defense of Timka333's STR pricing, here's a few in a 500 mile radius of the LA area. Prices have gone up a bit over the past couple of years, probably because they ain't made no more.
I'm sure prices vary widely throughout the country and one size does not fit all.
Even an '08 3.0 similar to mine is comparatively much higher than when I got mine 3 1/2 years ago.

I dont think its that bad of a price if it comes with a good warranty. I paid 28k for mine, but it had 12k miles when I got it and its an '07. I''ll tell you one thing for sure. If I end up keeping mine and putting those kind of miles on it, and someone offers me $14k for it, I'd rather let it sit and collect dust for the next 20 years.
