Hi everyone, I just bought a beautiful 2005 STR and have a few things to repair. Today I am trying to determine if I need new rear discs or not. The pads are well above the minimum thickness but I can't determine the minimum thickness for the discs/rotors. Can anyone tell me please? Is there a great resource for all things STR I need to find? I also have a 2005 S Type 4.2 and I would like to know more about which parts are common to both and which parts are unique to the STR.
At this point I will be working on repairing/replacing: both upstream O2 sensors, DCCV valve, the climate control module, lower oil pan gasket, air and cabin filters, Hood struts, perhaps the radiator. At some point I will also replace the front upper control arms (split boot on one side), rear sway bar links (cracked bushings).
For vehicles with Brembo brakes: Min front rotor thickness is 30mm. Min. rear rotor thickness is 15mm.
If you haven't already done so, have a good read of all the points on this forum you've mentioned above for guidance.
I would also have a close look at the compressor for any signs of leakage; have a good read about that also for an STR. Not sure what history/receipts this nice looking car has, if unsure, change the receiver drier sack, re-gas/lube and top up the system.
You're in Canada but keep an eye on the temperature gauge until you know the car. Some of the hoses may be soft, check all the ones from the radiator and thermostat housing to the engine. Think about changing the valley hose as well and oil change in the supercharger while your at it. Oil and filter change in the auto as well.
Check the bottom of the cam cover gaskets with a small mirror as well. Wouldn't bother too much with the upper wishbone bush boots, but check all 4 corners of the bottom arms. Most are a hydra-mount bush, some of the lower front bushes need the arms to be removed to see signs of wear.
All the above is just maintenance; many items you may already know about as an S Type owner. These cars are not 4 cyl Toyotas but are quite robust and reliable for what they are.
You will find the jaguar workshop manual, the jaguar electrical manual and all the technical service bulletins are on on the Jagrepair web site.
Here is a link: JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource
In general the STR shares very few mechanical parts with your non super-charged s-type. Even the body shell is different unless you have a 'sports' body on your V8!
The best way to find out for sure is to use the official parts catalogue in the link above and look up the part numbers for both cars. If the parts are the same so will be the part numbers.
There are some parts that are the same, for example the 05-model year and newer cars all have the same rear bumpers and all the s-types have the same front wings but the colours changed with the years. The d2b entertainment system modules are also the same, and are the same as those used in other jaguars at the time including the X type and the XJ.
By the way the 05 model year cars were all made in 2004. The 10th digit in your vin number will give you the model year, but for parts you will still need the serial numbers at the end, in your case startng with the 'N' before the five numbers.

Well, I just went to the online parts catalogue and am having trouble with the first part I'm looking for. All the radiator choices that specify a vin number range start with "M", then have 5 digits. Mine is N36177. Am I missing something or do they parhaps not offer the radiator I need?
Thanks, that's the one I was looking at. When I expand the descriptions at the right side of the page, this comes up: FROM VIN M45255 - TO VIN M62099. Does that include my N36177 ?
Thanks, I appreciate the help. I am still confused though. These radiators are listed in terms of vin numbers that start with "M". Mine starts with "N". It's number range is 45255 to 62099 or "from 61200". Mine is only 36177.
Great looking STR! I also had a 2005 and it was a very good car that I drove to 132K miles. You have the rare (For North America anyway) headlight washers.
My main suggestion is to DIY the work which it looks like you plan to do. But your two best tools will be the;
JEPC-Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog (Illustrated Parts Catalog)
JTIS-Jaguar Technical Information System (Shop Manual)
The good news both of these are free and on this forum but you will need to do a bit of work to install them. The JEPC depends on flash player which has now been discontinued and even worse has been automatically removed via the Microsoft updating process. There are ways around it just like anything software related but it takes a bit of study/work.

Yes I agree XR839090 is for supercharged cars from M45255 onwards.
£1,342.86 from Jaguar.
Probably about £250 for an aftermarket part, but sadly they may be near impossiable to find now as I think the after-market companies do not make them any more.
I think I’m coming to understand this but hope for confirmation or clarification. I believe my STR has the same engine radiator as all others from M45255 onward. I understand now that my vin of N36177 is after the M’s. This seems to be part number C2C36506. Is this correct? Mine is leaking halfway down the black plastic tank on the right side. This seems to only occur during cooldown. 🤔
I think I’m also coming to understand my STR has a second radiator in front of the one for the engine. It seems to be for the supercharger and the part number is CR839090. Mine isn’t leaking.

there’s the radiator with trans cooler fittings and the one without. the links i gave you are the best deals for yours
Yes the N prefix vin numbers started after M99999.
You can tell the model year of your car by the number before the N.
51 is a 05 model year car made in 2004 like my one.
61 is a 06 model year car made in 2005.
The model years are one year ahead of the build years.
The change of model year was done over the Christmas shut down at the factory.
The '1' is for a Castle Bromwich made S-TYPE 4.2 V8 super charged car.
(Your non sc 4.2 V8 will have a '6' in place of the '1'.)
See the body shell date of my 05 (4.75) model year car that was made on 12 January 2004 in my group signature below. The body shell was changed for the 05 model year facelift cars and is not the same as the pre-facelift body shells..
