3.0litre gear box help
Hi,
My s type has lost forward drive. Bit of a long story, which I'll condense.
I keep it parked on my drive, which has a slope which is quite steep. Anyway yesterday I couldn't get it out of park, I think it may have rolled back before hand brake was applied. So against minting I forced it out of park, into drive (it went into gear fine once out of park) then into reverse, drove of my drive, then put it into drive a nd pulled away. It was juddering to start but went OK, turned the corner and the car had no power to get up the hill.
Pulled over, messed with gear lever, turned car on and off etc and the car was fine. Later when I got back it struggled to get enough drive to go up my drive. 10 minutes later I popped out and I couldn't get drive, so the car is parked up on the road. I'll take a look later but what am I looking for.

Firstly Welcome to the Forum.
When the Jag is sorted, please do an intro in the New Member area.
Since yours is a 2001 with the 5 speed trans, you have more than likely broken the plastic/nylon cable adaptor that slides on the actual gearlever.
There are threads in here about it, and the fix.
Rather common issue with sloping driveways etc.
Might pay to add your car details to your sig via the CP tab near the top of the page.

hi again.
so, ive taken the j gate apart, replaced the part thingy .
however i think i still have a problem, ive found when i pull it back to go into D, it doesnt engage but the light lights up.
so i just pull harder on it and it engages, am i right in thinking if i adjust the cable maybe 1 turn of the nut then it should engage easier.

You do not indicate in your posts the number of kilometres/miles on the vehicle. Has the gearbox been serviced with the filter and fluid replaced?
Has any work been done to the centre console that required removing the sifter mechanism?

its got about 120k on the clock, no service history to speak of, but before incident on Saturday everything was fine.
shifter mechanism was removed today, to replace plastic part with after market metal part

Is the '120k on the clock' in kilometres or miles? It does make quite a difference you know.
Assuming the gearbox has never been serviced, that should be one of your top priorities if you intend to keep the vehicle running. The 5R55N gearbox uses Mercon V fluid, which is readily available from most parts houses. Review procedures in JTIS, or purchase the Workshop Manual from one of the eBay or Internet vendors. The pdf version is about 10$US.

yep, i appreciate that, and fully understand the need for regular servicing of all component parts, however i'm more concerned with getting it driving than keeping it driving at this moment, as my family are reduced to public transport until its fixed.

Obtain the Workshop Manual as the procedure for adjustment of the shift selector cable is clearly outlined.
Once you have adjusted the shift selector cable, report back so that can be eliminated as a possible fault.
