Angry 4.2 Coolant Leak From Back of Motor..

So driving home I noticed a coolant low warning so I kept an eye on the temp guage till I got home. When I pulled in the driveway and popped the hood the coolant was boiling and there was a giant puddle underneath of the car.

The coolant is dripping off of the front of the transmission so I'm pretty certain that its leaking from the back of the motor. Before I go out there and get the car in the air I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem?

Thanks,
Eric

Thanks jagv8 for the link. I read the whole story and his issue sounds almost identical. I wasn't even aware that there were any hoses back there. In all honesty I still have not even lifted the car off the ground. Been too mad at her all weekend, so I've been driving my old car and haven't touched it.

Tonight will probably be the night that I get under there and check it out. Expecting to find a cracked hose inside of a mouse hole that will require disassembling the entire motor to remove. Oh well, that's what I get for buying a car made after 74'.

You're welcome - Ialways enjoy your posts (oops, nearly wrote "horror stories" lol)

It would help to have more details but the other STR is in the shop

Good luck with yours and please post pics and some brief notes or whatever you can manage!

I wonder if anyone on the XK or XJ forums has had anything similar? I don't know if their hoses are routed the same places, though.

Maybe this hose is leaking?? It looks like it runs under the supercharger. It does sound like a hose with the volume of water coming out.

Hi Guys, I am trying to gather info on an Anti-Freeze leak.

WhiteSTR: What was the final disposition of your A-F leak problem? Thanks.

tbird6: Which engine is this?

Many thanks,
Brian

It's from a STR?? That's what the guy was asking about?? This hose runs under the super charger and is pretty much invisible unless the super charger is removed.

crap, I had very similar symptoms today. I just refilled the resivoir and will see if my coolant goes down. I smell a hint of "marshmellow" type smell which I believe is coolant. I just got this car so this sucks. I've put about 100 miles on it so far. It seems like a slower type leak; I don't see fluid pouring out or on the ground after I park it.

What did your problem end up being? What was the fix? I don't mind taking the blower off if I need to so that I can fix that hose. I don't see anything from the top of the engine.

It is the hose under the super charger, and the one tip I can give if you DIY is this. when you take off the blower, slot the very back mounting hole so you can start that bolt and slip the blower in with the bolt already in. Its a royal pain to do if not

I just took a second look at the engine bay. I parked on a hill with the nose tilted upward and guess what... coolant dripped off the underbelly tray.

I didn't see any signs of fluid elsewhere. I tried to look into the valley, but the blower blocks my view in most instances. Are there any other tips for diagnosing this problem? The engine compartment is pretty clean for the most part, so I probably should be able to identify it fairly easily if I had it apart. I just don't want to take the blower off and then not fix the problem. The leak is fairly slow right now (1/4 of the overflow tank in 10 miles of driving) so I'm guessing it's a pinhole in one of the hoses. Is there a replacement part from Jag or is this just high pressure hose?

Also, are there any good threads on supercharger r&r? I still haven't picked up a FSM yet.

Have you checked out the many threads about coolant / expansion tank / DCCV issues? Chances are that your leak is NOT at the back.

I'll do a search today. Thanks for the heads up. I'm new to this car so I appreciate the help!

it looks like the leak is indeed coming from the back of the motor. WhiteSTR, how did you fix yours? Did you send it to a shop and if so, how much did it cost? Supercharger R&R is quoted at 6.2 hours in the shop manual apparently, so that would cost a fortune....

WhiteSTR (Eric in Miami) hasn't been active on this forum in a long time. He had said previously that he was tired of the cost of repairing his STR and was probably going to sell it. Judging by his absence around here throughout most of 2010, he probably did so....

I'm doing this repair also, but am not going to pull the engine. According to the JTIS, it can be done in the car and the instructions I downloaded looks like it will take time
but still not too difficult. I will be taking photos and passing along the instructions once I get them scanned.
