Cool 4.2 S type R Exhaust Smoke with Codes

I have a 2003 Jaguar S Type R 4.2 Supercharged engine that starts to smoke what appears to be a greyish cloud. Only seems to happen after the engine has warmed up, then continues when you push hard on the accelerator like up hills or from a stop. It appears to have more smoke coming from the left tailpipe than the right and smells like fuel possible unburnt fuel burning off? I also get the same 2 codes, P1646 and P0037, I have replaced the Bank 1 sensor 2 already since it was the cheapest, but the codes keep coming back, any suggestions.

Myfirstjag, punch in the codes and/or the situation into the "search forum" feature, you'll turn up a recent thread on your situation. How many miles on your STR? I have an 03 STR with 97k.

The car only has 56,000 miles on it.

How does she start, run, etc.? Do you hear/suspect a vaccume leak or ignition misfire? Check the definition of the codes for they may define a burnt-out ignition coil(s). Your STR is in need of fresh coils, plugs, air, and fuel filters.

The car runs nice and smooth, I pulled the spark plugs to check the condition of the electrode, and everything looks normal, no carbon, no soot, and not burned up just clean as one would expect. Has a new air filter, just did the oil change, swapped out the fuel pressure regulator. Topped off the fuel tank and added injector cleaner. Could the P1646 code cause both oxygen sensors to be flagged or could it be something else?

P1646 is Bank1 sensor1 out of range.

I would try to unplug the sensor plug it back in, clear the codes and see if the code comes back.

P1646 code is reported on jtis as
OBD II ECM HO2 Sensor control malfunction –bank 1 upstream
when this happens the HO2S 1/1 control circuit is inhibited

Possible causes are :-
HO2 Sensor 1/1 heater failure
HO2 Sensor 1/1 sensing circuit (short circuit to ground, short circuit to high voltage, open circuit) or ECM Failure.

It takes a 10 minute drive to monitor the sensor.

Ok, here's an update on the problems, the smoke seems to have cleared with putting fresh gas and injector cleaner. The codes persist, I drove it around, the codes remained off, as soon as I shut the car off then go to restart the check engine light comes on immediately after restart, same codes. Im using an Actron AutoScanner Plus model: CP9180 and I can monitor the two O2 sensors after the cat and both work everytime, so maybe its just an issue with the Bank 1 upstream sensor. I will check voltage, shorts, resistance and see if I find anything wrong.

In case you don't know, the upstream are a completely different type of sensor (wideband aka linear). They should not swing around the way the older type do.

Ok, replaced the O2 Sensor after the cat, fault went away, swapped the HO2S (Sensor before cat) from left to right, fault followed so I am going to replace the bad HO2S. So this means there are no ECM problems or wiring harness problem. Thanks for all the help, if I have any more issues I'll be sure to post.

From the post, you can be fairly sure yes. However...... what car & what codes do you have? Don't ASSUME what worked here will be appropriate!

2003 S type R 126k miles. P1646 code. extremely intermitant exhaust smoke will come out some times on a hard turn or from a stop. Normal revs at a stop or regular driving causes no smoke. For now I'm assuming the O2 code is caused by the oil passing by, I deleted the code and drove it for about 15 miles with out it coming back on. I will test the sensor in the next few days. I'm going to purchase some new plugs, PCV, Oil + Fuel filter to install today. I will also compression check the engine before the new plugs install.

If you look at the codes PDF (free from the FAQs) you'll see it would NOT come back on in the drive you did.

That PDF is the best thing I know to read as it guides you on the known causes of each code and thus what to test before changing any parts.
