Hi, just joined! 3months into my first jag! I'm loving the feel! I'm used to big cars, some crap but mostly decent, bmw, Volvo, mainly Saab's though! And the style is lacking on space but its still a nice ride!!

Anyway, I'm doing my usual on my cars, go through the checks! I like a tight car. I've replaced front springs, drop links, front lower wishbone bushes, n/s upper wishbone, front antiroll bar bushes,front and rear trackrod ends,

I have 20" chrome alloys on the car, look superb!

I have visited a few tyre shops every time I do work on the suspension and it has been a nightmare with alignment. Farmers Autocare was the place I took her, now I'm at a place called redpath tyres, just had another second opinion from redpath tyres and they've adjust the toe etc but the guy says he needs 2 hours to adjust drivers side front and passenger side rear camber!!! I've read up on the jag stype and and alignment details, spec, process and special 4 wheel alignment machines. Looking at what's been done, how its being adjusted and end up with so called aligned wheels, when I'm in fact not?

If i can I'll put up a photo of the printout.

This issue makes me mad cause it makes the unstable at speeds of 60mph plus, handles crap. I thought replace parts, take her to a tyre shop, wheels balanced, alignment done with right equipment and should be sorted!

Any info, advice would be great

20" will not help as they're too big.

You may have suspension problems, never mind alignment.

We don't know what car you have... see below.

Engine size?

Fair chance you have suspension issues, especially at that age car. (And the later cars have a redesigned much better suspension arrangement anyway, which yours hasn't.)

Done major front suspension work, read first post. Just swapped wheels front to back and car is holding the road a hell of alot better, thinking bad tyre or possibly bent alloy wheel???

 

Also my car has been a little slow, so I've noticed and I now have a engine management light on the dash and the car seems to accelerate better which more power and smoother. I don't have a code reader so I'm think o2 sensor possibly. Any suggestions??

 

Don't guess. Buy OBD tool, from about £5

 

I would dump the 20" wheels especially after you posted it's a 6cylinder. What's the point? Your slowness might be from the large oversize rims you are running.

Make sure the shop has the right specs too. Brutal has posted several timesthat there are many places using the wrong numbers. Easy to find with a search.

The 20" look great, and the slowness I'm talking about is nothing to do with the alloys. The car drives great when first started until it warms up. Either its a engine sensor or something to do with the auto box.
Brutals specs are for left hand drive cars. Mines right and pre facelift, which has a different suspension setup to the facelift 2002+ models.

 

They may look great. But I'll wager they are completely oversized for the car's suspension. But you probably don't want to hear that. The unsprung weight of 20s is gonna compromise steering handling and change your gear ratio in all probability which will make the car slower of the line. Again, you probably don't want to hear that. So enjoy your 20s I'm sure they look fantastic.

Obviously the handling/alignment will just never be right due to the 20s.

 

Problem solved........steering rack bushes knackered. The 20" alloys are alot heavier and thus dramatically increases pressure on the rack. Movement that wouldn't be noticed with smaller wheels. The whole rack moves/twists about an inch when turning steering while stationary, I presume when driving this movement makes the car wander and steering feel vague.
Basically anyy size wheel is fine as long as all bushs, ball joints etc have no play. If I want I could put 22" alloys on the car and the car, any car would drive great.

 

Also lack of power when warmed up due to faulty temp sensor. Also replaced gaskets on inlet manifold etc. Check air intake system and all is good now. Steering great, and plenty plenty power,even with the so called heavy 20" alloys. Not saying they don't affect the cars performance but not as much as I have been led to believe. So happy happy happy....
