Your era can be a bit tough to bleed so read up where the bleed screw(s) is/are etc. People have posted this before in order to help you and others!
I'd go for the max but expect to have to top it up.

Yeah, seems a lot of differences, the JTIS talks about "filling" and some cross over bleed that I don't think is on the '01?? The words "To the max cold line" or "to the top of the tank" would have been nice! Oh well, that's why I come on here....

The markings on the reservoir are of no relevance if the system is less than 100% free of air.
Get rid of the air first, then worry about stabilized tank level.

Yeah so that's what I was in the process of, bleeding, so "fill the tank" just wasn't that clear, especially as described in JTIS; but everything seems ok now as far I can tell, I've been monitoring the level and opening the bleed screw after each drive.

Good idea. I'm still checking the coolant level in my 2005 S-Type's reservoir every morning since replacing the upper radiator hose assembly a week ago. Had to add just an ounce or two more coolant this morning....
