Default Anti-rattle clips/brake pads

I took my 2005 S-Type 4.2 N/A in to have rear tie rods and a front control arm/ball joint installed at my semi-local independent Jaguar mechanic. After installing the new parts they test drove it and noticed a rattle in the front end. They put it back on the hoist and discovered that the brake pads were rattling in the caliper carriers. On further inspection it was discovered that none of the brake pads had anti-rattle clips installed in them.

I had a complete set of "ceramic euro spec" front and rear brake pads and rotors installed at another shop that I use for simple repairs and tires that is down the street from my residence about 12K miles/2 years ago.

My question is, do new brake pads for these vehicles come with the new pads or are the old ones generally re-used? Do all brake pads on the S-types use the anti-rattle clips? Are they extremely hard to fit perhaps causing the installer to skip them? I'm attempting to know as much as I can about this before I approach the shop for an explanation/solution.

I have only done my brakes once on both axles and both pad sets came with all the new clips and such. They are not hard to install but need to be installed at the proper time

I agree, they should be installed at the proper time - when they are first installed! My independent Jaguar specialist says the way to go is to replace the pads now with new pads with proper clips. He checked the rotors and with only 12K on them he feels they are within spec and good to go.

The confusing thing is that Jaguar fitted both pads that need the clips and ones that don't at various times. The length of the pads differ by a small amount and people and suppliers' documentation get them confused. Take a look here for some details I put together some years back: https://www.jaguarforum.com/threads/.../#post-1127720

The long and the short is that the shorter pads with with the clips are a better solution but the longer pads without are also OK. The shorter pads without the clips will rattle.

You can reuse them as they are made from a good stainless steel and clean up well. I expect you will find replacements on ebay for not much money. They look like these:

Front: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331513991399
Rear: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261809677362

Thanks for the information - it certainly helps me understand what may have happened. I'm off to talk to the installer but 13K and 2 years later I doubt that they will be willing to do anything to remedy this situation. I will look into purchasing new clips but my local Jag specialist claims that they are not available in the states. I'll probably end up having to buy new pads with clips for both the front and rears and have them installed.

Didn't they sell the Lincoln LS and the Ford Thunderbird in the US

Ask for these or their equivalents:

Front: Dorman HW5657
Rear: Dorman HW5696

I went back to the original installer who has ordered new clips for all 8 pads and hopefully will install them Monday.

Update:
I dropped the S-Type off with the original installer on Monday. They called me early this morning and said that the car was ready. When I picked it up the service technician said that indeed the front anti rattle clips were missing, the rotors were fine but he felt that the front pads had suffered from not having the clip so he installed new front pads with clips at no charge. They also inspected the rear pads and found that the clips were installed and the pads were fine so no work was performed.

This forum is a godsend, it gave me the information that I needed to explain what the problem was in a coherent manner resulting in honoring the work 2 years and 13 thousand miles later.

Would these part numbers be good for the S Type R as well?

Sorry, no. The earlier S-Type Rs had Brembo floating disc brakes which are completely different. The later ones switched to hardware from ATE, which are different again, and I don't think had any such clips.

The clips mentioned fit the TRW/Lucas hardware of the pre-facelift cars and the earlier facelift ones. At some point, these also got ATE hardware.

Thank you for the response! Mine is a post facelift 2006 model with ATE brake hardware. Looking to source pads & rotors shortly for my STR.

For your STR, I think you need to look for these Jaguar part numbers/equivalents:

Front Discs: C2D61074
Front Pads: C2D60654

Rear Discs: C2D61075
Rear Pads: C2P26112 or C2D48654

They are all usually ATE supply but the front pads are actually Jurid 310 GG-rated. People say that they are dusty (I find them just normal) but they are grippy and have really good feel. These are one OE pad I actually try and stick with (same compound on my XKR and a similar one on the S-Type).

Thank you for the response! I’ll start doing so now. Much appreciated.
