Ash tray clip replacement?
Okay first question folks,
On a 2000 S type the front center ash tray has a small black clip in the bottom of the tray lid. This is something that jaguar has had issues with an used to fix if the customer complained about it as a shut them up thing. Now I went online looking for this small black clip an one fella is selling them for about 30 bucks shipping an handling...not hating on the capitalist but dude 30 bucks? Anywho I went to the local u-pull-it and found one, now the issue is how do I fix this without tearing stuff up an having my wife pissed at me....fellas she's wanted this car since it came out in 2000, an a poor boy like me had too wait until I could luck up on this gem.. so tearing it up ain't an option.. please help out a old shade tree
thanks,

i just did my front ashtray clip, got it on eBay from a guy in Israel (!). I ordered 2 so to keep one as a spare. Fairly straightforward install - gear knob off, remove screws holding back of console on (mine was broken back there), undo the snap fastener and slide E brake boot up, using plastic trim remover lift up the console, remove the 2 or 3 electrical connectors for the buttons in the console by depressing the tangs. Two little screws from underneath hold the ashtray on, and then slip out the broken latch and pop in the new. Re-insall is reverse of removal. A bit of work for a tiny clip, but worth a beer when done

It was a 'thing' 'back-in-the-day' and Jaguar issued a TSB for the latch repair.
I probably still have a few in a toolbox drawer from the days when I did so many repairs. (thanks for the memories)

This part can be found on eBay for peanuts. It is the same mechanism as the latch on a Brabantia bin. I bought one for mine a few months back for a couple of quid. Search for 'Brabantia bin catch'. You can get three for £2.99.
The same part is used by Japanese car manufacturers for ashtrays, sunglass holders and other storage areas.
I couldn't believe it when I found out that Jag want £40 for a part that is the same as on my kitchen bin. I could have bought a new bin to cannibalise and still be quids in!
