Default Auto Headlights Stay On

Sometimes, with lights set on AUTO, when I turn off the car at night it starts to ding like I left the lights on. And they do not turn off.

I have to turn them off manually.

Then next time I set it to AUTO and the delay works perfectly.

Has anybody had this happen?

It happened to me recently on my 2003 but, unfortunately, I don't have the solution.

Slightly faulty stalk (turn signal?) or ignition flap, maybe.

I recently had issues with my indicator stalk, which when you take it apart is easy to see why. The thin wires inside get trapped by the movement of the stalk and over time, will break. At one point, my sidelights stayed on, even with the key out. I had disconnect the battery to turn them off.
The wiring in the stalk module sets various commands, one of which is the auto lights off delay. It's quite easy to get the stalk apart.
