Default Battery Disconect

Hello, all. First, if I disconect the battery in an '03 Stype 3 liter must I have some sort of code to make the radio function again. Next, Auto Zone tells me I need a mass flow sensor to get rid of my check engine light and if I replace it and that is the problem will the check engine light go out on its own or do I need to disconnect the battery to reset the ECM? Thanks, Don

Don, you will have to reset the radio stations and clock thats it, and reset the EPB, both simple enough.

What are the codes that say your MAF is bad? Also you may be able to clean the MAF sensor first before replacement.

The code will clear itself or you can borrow a torx driver from the Zone and replace the sensor in their parking lot and use their scanner to clear it. Takes only a minute or so to swap out the sensor.

Make Vato Zone tell you the number and bring it here for posting before you buy any parts. Lots of good help here if you have your codes....

I don't believe N.American cars have radio codes. I've disconnected the battery on my daughter's 03 3.0L many times with no radio issues.

My 03 also does NOT require a code.

You can get the radio code from the dealer over the phone with your Vin#. That is what I had to do, when I got my 2004 STR, the closest dealer for me is around 80 miles. Then I wrote it down in the manual, where it should have been anyway. Paul

Ruh roh! sorry for posting the lie above...and thanks to Achy and Urop for fixing me.

Really! Because I'm condsidering replacing the wife's battery in the 05 due to age, no problems just think it may be time..(can't remember ever having disconnected it, thus far)

Anyone know if the code can be read from WDS?

Again, sorry for bad info....maybe only the X300...but I could SWEAR I read somewhere authoritative that NA Mkt cars didn't use radio codes...

If you have them, it's worth seeing whether pressing FFWD (>>), AMEM & PTY at the same time works.

JUst tried it, no joy. Hope that means I don't have a code. John, I tried it both with head on and off. I held the buttons for up to maybe 10 seconds. (thinking +2 should've made something happen if it was going to) With pwr off, it turned the head unit on. Already on...no change.

Default Codes

Just got back from Auto Zone and this time two fault codes appeared:

P1111 and P1647

When the guy tried to look them up he could find nothing for an 03 S Type 3 liter. He also said he could not turn of the check engine light. He said that usually indicates Intake temp sensor issues.

Any Thoughts? Thanks, Don

Look each of those up on here using Search or get the DTC PDF from the FAQs. P1111 is good, the other's not the end of the world. (Any P1xxx is make- and can be engine- and/or year- specific.)

P1111 just means that certain components have passed a series of tests. If you clear codes, it changes to P1000 until the test passs again. It's automatic so don't worry about it.

P1647 means Linear O2 Sensor Control Chip, Bank 2. Bank 2 is on your right as you look at the engine.

Now, before you throw parts at this, Jag recommends that you check the wiring for shorts to ground or shorts to power. This the upper O2 sensor. Check fuses too.

The U.S. cars will not need a radio code if the radio head unit is set to US. The head unit can be set to various markets (ie Europe, Austrailia, Japan, US etc.)

If you change the country setting you will need to reset the memory station presets.

There are different frequencies for different markets.

Glendaormike, thanks, while I was waiting for a reply I looked up the codes and found p1647. thanks for also telling me which bank is which. It looks like there are two oxegen sensors on each side and it looks like the problem is with the second sensor (farthest from the front on the driver's side (American) Is that right? I think I may be getting to understand how to use this forum, finally. Don

This is what the Jag JITS says about it. Check wiring loom plugs, wiring, grounds. I think that you are most likely to have a wiring problem. A lot of this requires a digital multimeter. You probaly don't have an ECM failure. That is last on the list. This reads better in the JITS. Search for "JITS" for more info on that. It will be the first O2 sensor. 2/1 means bank 2 sensor 1.

The"HO2" means heated O2 sensor. I don't know how old it is, but if the wiring checks that may be your bad guy.

P1647 EMS

— HO2 Sensor 2/1 heater failure
HO2 Sensor 2/1 sensing circuit:

high voltage, open circuit, high resistance

Do this:
Go to your local auto parts store and get the book called HAYNES TECHBOOK OBD-II & ELECTRONIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. It tells you what things are and how they work. It also gives you tests that you can run. A whole lot of the engine controls now are made by outside vendors like Denso. You will find their stuff on a lot of different brands of cars. The big differences among the cars is stuff like this HO2 sensor has three wires and that one has four. The difference there is how it is grounded.

GOOD LUCK

Just got back from Auto Zone, again, and they swear the driver's side ( left hand steering) is bank 1 and the passenger side is bank 2. Does Jaguar revers banks because of right hand drive in GB?

Jaguar use the international standard for your car. AutoZone are wrong. Bank 1 is always on the right, and you're driving an LHD car surely.

If you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine, bank #1 is on the left. Here is what it looks like:

I looked up Bosch oxegen sensors on the net and they list two types, before the converter and after the converter. There is no mention of bank 1 or bank 2 or left or right side. Are they the same on both sides? Why would the differ from one side to the other?
