Default Big problem guys

Hey Whats up Guys,
I have a 2000 Jaguar S Type 3.0. with 170k miles and I kinda like my paid-off, still good-looking, Jaguar .
MY ISSUE IS:
-the transmission has started to slip and it has been doing this for a couple months.. so its going bye bye (sealed transmissions dont get typical maintenance)
-the car has develpoed a rod knock
I typically buy/fix and sell cars but clearly the engine and trans price will be more than the car is worth given its age and mileage...but i do NOT want a carnote but i wan a european car equally as nice and I dont like the idea of scrapping my baby..so i have been flirting with an idea:
Im looking to find a 2003 s-type r thats been totaled or flood damamged or w.e. and after having the motor pulled(gaskets replaced/timing chain done) swapping everything over to my car....I am aware it will be time consuming and the physical swap (I don't believe, but idk) shouldnt be hard as ive done many OEM engine and trans replacements before..
I just figure if im gonna spend a **** load of money to put it back on the road it would be cool to have a S-type r ....id have an updated interior instead of the dated 00-02 interior.....and oh the power would be fun too..ESPECIALLY WITH NO CAR NOTE .
Guys i really dont wanna scrap my car......

Well, at least for my part - I had a leak from the transmission sleeve. Slowly I lost transmission oil and all kind of transmission issues start to show up:
Backlash of the gear while shifting up or down at low speeds, Lurking, noise, vibrations. This sealed gear does have it's maintenance procedure.. The gear oil filter has to be replaced, and if you have leaks - it must be fixed. At 170kMiles - your way over your "sealed for life" gear maintenance period.
I reflushed the gear, the procedure is discussed here to last detail on forum - you will find it easily with pictures. At least you can check it was not leaking from this sleeve, that's for the gear thing.... Check it - maybe there is a good surprise there.. Just make sure to use the correct oil. Important!

It's a huge task to put an STR engine+trans into a pre-2003 car. There were vast mechanical and especially computer changes. Easier and cheaper just to buy a whole STR.

A recon 5R55N should be cheap as it's a very common box.

HEY thanks orlee for the help maybe i could salvage the gear box....i will check it out in the coming week .... hopefully we have similiar issues.... the whole reason i was interested in the STR conversion ib because i have to already buy an Engine and Trans already....i was thinking i could find a crashed STR for the combined price of the two...
And JAGV8
I appreciate the feedback...I knoe the 04+ cars have different bodies completely but the 03 STR resembles mine.....i thought maybe a swap would be straightforward...but thats why im here lol...because I dont know...

Your better off finding a used str there getting cheap especially with higher miles.

As has already said, trying to retrofit any 2003+ engine and transmission into a pre-2003 car is virtually impossible.

Find out exactly what's wrong with your present car and see if it makes sense to fix, sell or scrap it.

So you want to keep your beautiful, personalized and completely broken in '00, but you want the power and performance of a newer STR, and you don't want it to cost a lot of $$. WOW! In other words -you want the best of all worlds (who doesn't?).

I have an '01 (similar to your '00) and an '03 3.0L and worked under the hood of both of them yesterday. I can tell you there are significant under-hood differences between the two that IMHO would turn an engine swap into a money pit nightmare. Now throw in the additional complications of the STR engine and it seems to me it would be undoable without an unlimited supply of cash.

I'm not a mechanic but it looks to me that you would have to completely gut the engine compartment and start from scratch, hoping that all the mounting points in the engine bay mate with the STR engine. Computer issues, fuse assignments, suspension modifications, yada yada yada all seem to suggest that a better option is to buy a newer STR and make it your new "baby".

As mentioned above they're available now at very reasonable prices.
Good luck,
Steve

You got your use out of the car. Scrap it and move on.

You drove months with a slipping transmission? You do know it might have only been low on fluid but the continued use completely destroyed it.

Always better to stop driving it when you have big problems.
