Default Question about S-type Xtype Jag purchase

I would like to know on the s-type I know that anything 2004-2005 and newer were pretty good cars. What about in the x-type? Were any of the newer x-types any good, or should I stay away from them all? I see a 2004 x-type on auto trader with 48k miles for about 7k.

It's more pleasant going X-Type to S-Type than the other way around IMO.

Agreed. You'll read many complaints in the X-Type forum about lousy build quality....

Might want to ask the question directly in the X-type section.

They must be bad if they're worse than an S-type.

You must only have experience of bad ones. You're unlucky.

I went from an '05 X-Type 3.0/auto to a '08 S-Type 4.2l. The X-Type was a very nice car that I enjoyed a lot. Would have kept it longer (traded it about a year ago with 85k miles) but the S-Type became available and I couldn't resist.

The S-Type is a nicer but not really a lot. However, not having the AWD puts them in a completely different class where reliability is concerned. The AWD system of the X-Type is very failure prone so potential owners should be well informed prior to deciding to get one. The X-Type forum here (X-Type - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum) has lots of advice. Would really suggest that any potential X-Type owner survey that list before deciding to buy one.

As far as I know, the S-Type has no similar fatal design flaws of sort that the X-Type does.

I bought an 03 x-type with 80k and kept it until around 115k and had no problems the entire time except for the coolant tank and the suspension was getting bad towards the end. I bought a 05 str with 80k now around 105k and its also been trouble free. That being said the str is 10 times nicer in every way. The x-type feels cheap while the str feels like a 60k car. As far as reliability goes my car has been more reliable than my friends newer civics and accords etc.. its all about the condition of the car when you buy it.

I remember a saying about the X-Type: Its the cheapest Jaguar to buy and most expensive to own.
