Default Boot does not want to latch

Hi All,

The boot of my Dad's S-Type 3.0 X204 will not latch closed without assistance. As it stands right now we've managed to shut it but only by manually adjusting the plastic lever inside the mechanism so that it is all the way to the left (see photo below). We can then open the boot electronically or manually but will have to readjust the plastic lever in order to close it again.

Am I correct in thinking that the boot release cable, which seems to be intact needs to be threaded through the plastic lever (see photo below)? We are currently on a road trip at the moment, so we haven't been able to remove the lock mechanism from the boot lid but it seems to be the case that the cable pushes and pulls the plastic in order to open and close the boot. Trying to move the cable with pliers has proved to fairly futile as getting a good grip on the ball has been difficult and I do not want to break the ball off the cable.

My hypothesis could be entirely wrong so any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
David

I have had this problem on my 2006 once when the latch was getting weak. I would use the key to work the latch manually a couple times and it would be good for a bit. Finally replaced the latch and all fixed. Try using the key to unlock and see how it then closes and latces. That ball on the end of the cable is the manual key release. It extends to the lever when the key is turned. If the electric part of the latch is getting weak it will not return to the ready postion. Maybe a squirt of wd 40 or spray silicone lube cannot hurt

Thank you, I will give this a go once we’re home. Looks like replacing the latch might be the best thing to do.

I’ve found a replacement latch for x200 s types, which I believe is a ford part. Do you know if the latch is the same between pre and post facelift models?

i do not know about the pre or post facelift. Try terrys jag website and it will guide you. That is where i got mine. New. About 135.00 delivered. Not too bad to change. The first time i put a used one in. Lasted about 1 year. This time i went new. If you ever here the latch struggle or vibrate rapidly it is on the way out

Great thank you, I’ll give that a go. Hopefully shipping to Australia won’t be too expensive.
