Brake Fluid Low light

Brake Fluid Low light
I've had my2006 S-Type 4.2 for less than 10 months, and the "Low Brake Fluid " warning light keeps coming on when I press the brakes. The dealer told me that I need new rear brake pads. I find it hard to believe the rear pads would wear out so quickly, and even if they do, could that be causing the "Low Brake Fluid" light to come on.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to say that it is both. I manually turn of the parking brake now just incase and with all that dust I would have no pads or rotors left if it was just my parking brake. I have to wash my rear wheels 4 times to every 1 time I have to wash my fronts and the fronts are still very clean before washing and the backs are black! But of course THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM.

Thank you all for the replies. We have confirmed that the pads are low, but it bothers me that this happened with less than 10K miles of driving.At this rate, I would have to change thepads every year.Tomorrow we're taking it to another dealer for a second opinion. Will keep you posted.

If u bought ur car brand new and it has less than 12000 miles and
less than one year since u bought it, it has to be cover under warranty. premature wear. must have parking brake motor
seized, causing premature wear.

..... and thanksfor the tip Caps79.. I'll have to look into the warranty then. It cost me $275 to change the rear pads, and was told the front pads are less than 30%.
I love the car, but this is the third issue we're dealing with in less than a year. First the check-engine light came on, then the passenger side seat belt chime wouldn't turn off, and now the brakes. I know they're relatively minor issues, but still requires 2-3 daysat the dealerevery time.

Brake pads are cheap and easy to install. It's the other issues that the dragging pads cause that are the problem. All the damage caused by the eccessive and constant heat. Warped rotors, Burned out wheel bearings and over heated calpiers that can cause the seals to go bad leading to possible brake failure. They need to fix the problem not just keep installing new pads!
