Default Brake Issues

Hello all,

Recently did brake job, everything has been going great after replacing rear rotors, pads and bled all 4. My problem now is when I first start car the brakes need to be pumped or they do not work properly, have to mash down hard. This may have started since I stopped using the parking brake. Does anyone know what causes this? My calipers look pretty worn and I was planning to replace this weekend. Would that fix issue? Thank you for any information.

Vehicle details would be helpful........

Are you sure you bled the brakes correctly? On the 3.0's, there is 1 pin that needs to be set in the correct place on the caliper piston to properly work, again just a guess as I don't know what year, model, engine etc......

Would be very beneficial to you to add vehicle details in your signature, just go to "UserCP" and follow directions for "Edit Signature"

Good job on your signature! You might not have the mentioned nub (pin) on a 2000 MY.

Kinda lengthy thread but read the first post or so then go to about half way down on page #3 for the pics:

I am sorry I do not know. Do you still have the old pads laying around?

A hard pedal might indicate the power assist. The master cylinder and wheel cylinders can be inadvertently damaged when bleeding the system (on any car).

If you pump the brake pedal all the way to the floor when bleeding then you go past the normal wear marks in the cylinders and the seals can leak.

If you bleed the brakes by only depressing the pedal to the normal pedal travel (about halfway). That is, where they normally travel when braking. Then this will help prevent unnecessary damage to the wheel cylinders and master cylinder. The system will bleed the same as before but you need to pump more as you are only going halfway to the floor. This also seems a bit strange to do as the pedal will want to go all the way to the floor when the bleeder valve is loosened off.

A simple way to tell if the power assistance is the problem. Pump the brakes with the ignition off and then start the car while keeping your foot on the pedal, if the pedal goes down slightly then the power assistance is working and is not the problem and you can ignore the bleeding tip above as an issue in your case.

Good tip on bleeding the brakes, the pedal was definitely pushed down to much when bleeding. Hopefully the power assist is ok, will check on my days off.

So guys, if the power assist appears ok, my plan is to...clean brake parts, bleed system again and proper, see if problem persists. Any other ideas?
