Default Brake Rotor Min. Thickness Meaning

Folks,

Wonder if you could help with this.

An STR nominal rotor is 1.28" and the min. spec is 1.2".

Does the min. spec mean that after maching, the rotor must be greater then 1.2". This would mean that after you but them back on, the next set of pads can wear the rotor to be less then 1.2" (in this case, another 0.08" or 1.12")

Or does it mean, that you must replace the rotors if they are less then 1.2" thick?

Normally, I wouldn't care, but at $500 a pair and lasting only about 15k miles to the 1.2" mark with OEM pads, it may make a difference if the designed wear is 2 mm vs 4 mm.

I do not ever recommend machining rotors, I replace them or pads slap the first set, replace rotors, and pads with the second set. EBC rotors, dimpled and slotted are cheaper.but yes if, you decide to machine the rotors, and do so results in thinner than spec you need to replace them. I only machine is theres a vibration when braking from the rotors being warped, that being said youde probobly be below spec after machining to correct warpage anyway

Brutal,

Thanks, I wasn't planning on machining them but was wondering if the min. thickness applied as a limit to machining so it can wear past this thickness or its an absolute limit on thickness. My rotor wear after one pair of pads is at 1.20" or 2mm of wear at 16kmiles. I was wondering if I can put on another pair without maching which would wear it down to 1.12" after the pad is worn out.

I've heard from machine shops that they can't machine past the min. thickness and I've heard from others that the rotors need to be replaced after it reaches its min. thickness. If the machine shops surface the rotors close to the min thickness then it can wear past that point.

I guess what I am really asking is if the rotor design life really 2 mm to the min spec or 4 mm which allows one more set of pads at the min.
