It's the wrong car to get good MPG. Not that you've put its details.

You need something smaller, lighter and more recent design for fuel efficiency.

With regards to car types and fuel consumption, its all relative..
Remember when Clarkson proved the BMW M3 is more economical than the Toyota Prius?
The usual things to help with better fuel consumption (in no particular order) are like this:

1. Maintain the correct tyre pressures.
2. Remove all unnecessary weight from the car.
3. Use very little in the way of electrics in the car.
4. Don't use the aircon/climate control.
5. Use cruise control when possible.
6. Avoid locatons of regular traffic hold ups.
7. Accelerate and brake gentley.
8. Adopt a more predictive driving stance to avoid rapid changes in speed.
9. Drive with the windows closed.

Except he cheated. It's not actually, except under carefully chosen unreal conditions.

Yes, you read about chips, but little about how effective they are. The few that do work simply unleash the potential that the engine already has, frequently by removing or reducing safe guards that ensure good reliability. No thanks.

OEMs spend millions of dollars every year to improve mileage, sometimes gaining only tenths of an mpg. If it was a simple matter of playing with chips, they would have already done it.

The S-types already get excellent mileage given their size and power. How much money would you save per trip by swapping to a smaller econobox?
