Cam chain tensioners mystery - and small error on my side
Hey guys,
I've earlier made a thread (https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...4-0-v8-245485/) here on the forums where my S-Type 4.0 V8 exhibited a strange sound. Most everything pointed at the cam chain tensioners - so after many ifs and buts - I finally got around with the whole ordeal.
Lo and behold when the front cover finally came off, everything was pretty much brand spanking new (or so it seemed). The guides, chains, and tensioners were of the newer kind. However, when I looked closed at the guides (and the plastic part of the secondary tensioners, it was obvious that the chain had eaten itself into the plastic (and aluminium of the guides). Nothing horrible, but obvious signs of wear. Previous owner said that he made the change (though I believed it was only the secondary tensioners due to the rattling) roughly a year ago.
I bought a kit to chage to, so I'll do that non-the-less. However, I'm mystified by how this wear came to be, and I'm obviously interested in making sure it doesn't happen again (as this was quite heavy work..).
So, questions:
1. Any ideas on what can have caused the wear and tear?
2. Any ideas on how to make sure I do this properly?
3. I followed a video guide primarily when dismounting - however looking at the JTIS every now and then. I missed one thing, the camshaft position sensor and peg swap. How badly did I **** up because of this? I had to rotate the crankshaft a few times to align the camshafts before locking them in place. Is there anything I could/should do when mounting everything again?
Thankful for all the help I can get - tomorrow the car is getting pieced together again..
I've attached a picture of all the old stuff behind the front cover, so you can see.
What's the big difference between the guides? Harder plastic on the original ones? Do you think that this is the cause of the sound (from the other thread)?
Also - any tips on the missed camshaft position sensor? Anything to think about?
