Default Car coughs when idling

Just wanted to get other opinions.

I have 2000 S-Type 4.0L and it has a slight cough when it idles only when its warm. It also smells like its running a little rich. My mechanic pulled codes and we got a CAT converter code. We came to the brief conclusion that its most likely a bad upstream 02 sensor. Has anyone else experienced this?

Not having a V8, but.

Both my V6 cars did that. The Black worse than the Silver.

New coils fixed it all.

Same basic coil over princple, just you got 2 more cylinders.

O2 sensors, mainly PreCAT, are a service item. Not many bother until they go AWOL, but NGK (NTK), and Bosch, recommend 100K miles as a change out point.

Thats good to hear!
I believe 6 of the coils have been replaced recently .. would it be too tough to change the last 2 on my own or should i have a pro do it? what does it require?

I hope you have a good independent mechanic who knows Jaguars, and will keep you from chasing ghosts.

This forum is rich in info on 1st generation S-Types. Coil on Plug failure is common for just about every car. 4.0 has 8 possible fail points. Why did they stop at 6? Scanner will tell you which one they didn't- likely the culprit. Read the threads about the 4.0 here. These will help you keep that cat running like it looks!

Definitely related to a failing or failed coil(s) I would also recommend double checking the replaced coils if they are not OEM... Aftermarket coils are not highly regarded...

Stick with only Ford or OEM Jaguar coils..

Yes, my 2000 S Type coughs at idle only when I reach operating Temp. I also feel the same cough / stuttering at about 45 mph . Other than that the car runs great .. ( it also seems to be drinking more gas than usual)
