Default Cheap S Type Update

Hi

Bought the 3.0 V6 Auto with short MOT and 119K miles in January for £900. Spent £200 on it (mainly transmission fluid!) walked MOT. 3500 miles down line no probs apart from new expansion tank cap. Averaged just under 28mpg (actual) which I think is fairly good considering I don't do many motorway miles. Long may it continue!

Cheers

Andy

Hi Jag

Yes touch wood so far. I had done enough research to realise that it could have been a money pit. As they say 'it's cheap for a reason'. But took a short test drive and apart from wooden brakes it was OK. It had been unused for three months and by the time I got it home they were better. Just gave them a good clean up and they were fine. Had a couple of throttle related codes but they diappeared after I cleaned the throttle body. The only real issue is a slightly weeping output sharft seal at back of tranny wihich I didn't discover untill I got underneath it. Engines smooth so not touched that apart from oil change. Interior is as new apart from a *** burn on drivers seat. Everthing works apart from A/C which may just need a regas or could be serveral other expensive things. But as heating side works fine I can live with it.

Cheers

Andy

Might be cheap to fix the seal? If not, just check fluid level and top up LOL
(read up on how, which is a mite painful)

If you might want a/c be sure to have it checked for leaks & if none top it up as otherwise the seals tend to start to leak and it'll be too costly to fix. Also, the a/c compressor likes to be run to keep it working.

Thanks for the info re the A/C.

I've already changed the tans fluid are checked the level since so I am familiar with that pleasure!

As I have a couple of litres of fluid left I'm in the occasional check and top up camp!

The biggest challenge was how to get the car level and high enough (safely) to fit my considerable gut underneath it! A cut up railway sleeper came to my rescue.

Your leak is from the sleeve. It needs to be replaced.

Sounds like a good deal for sure. I bought an '01 X-type with 99k miles on it and drove it another ten thousand painless miles. Good cars when maintained.

Hi

In UK cars over three years old have this annual check legally. It's basically a roadworthyness check of suspension, steering, brakes etc and covers saftey items mechanical and electronic. Plus all dash warning lights have to work. Also an emissions test. Obviously its preferable to have a recent ticket on an old car but this one only had five weeks left. But it drove srtaight stopped straight engine was quite and no funny noises anywhere so took a chance.
So far so good!
