Cooling System leak diagnosis - 2004 STR
Hi guys. I currently have a leak in my cooling system. I'm loosing about 1/4 of the overflow tank per 10 miles. As I am new to the jag str and cooling problems, I'd like to run a few things by you.
I reviewed all of the threads on the leaky expansion tank. I saw the two top hoses and one larger hose on the back of the unit. Are there any tricks to seeing if it's leaking from there? If I park it on level ground, will it leak from there or will it leak onto the underbelly tray? I didn't think that I saw any tray under that part of the engine bay, but I'd just like to confirm. I'm also going let the car idle on flat ground and try to keep an eye on where the leaks are coming from.
I do have coolant on the tray that is behind the front axle. I can visually see that. I parked on a little bit of a off camber hill, with the front left of the car slightly higher than the rest of the car. Coolant ran off the right side of the undercar tray behind the front axle..
Update....
I moved the car to a new spot, let it idle and coolant is definately coming out of the rear side of the motor.
So I guess the hose under the blower is leaking(and what other members have told me). Where does that hose go to? It sounds like the blower is going to have to come off. Can I use just any high pressure hose or is there a specific type? I'm obviously goinng to try to get the best possible since it's a pain to replace. Do I need to order any thing else such as clamps? I am going to reorder the supercharger gasket but are there any others that I need to order. I'm a little overwhelmed so I don't want to miss ordering any parts that could cause delays.

I think this is 3 threads on the same subject!!!!!
Like I said yesterday if you are starting to Mod the cars performance and blower like you said, then take the Jag hose off and take it to a performance race shop and let them make you a performance cooling hose that will replace the factory one and last a very looooong time.
Your signature shows that you have a performance Vette and had a performance Stang, I don't get how you can be over your head with this problem considering the amount of mods done to your other cars. Unless they were done by a shop or a previous owner. They should have had nothing but high performance braided and fitted custom hoses.
This is done by racers and hot rodders all the time with great results.
It will problably cost less than the Jag OEM hose.

that probably wouldn't be a bad idea since it's a pretty serious and seamingly common problem.
About the braided hose... I have a good shop that I plan on taking the part to once I get it off. I'll see what they can do. The actual part is shaped in kind a unusual shape. It's not just a hose, but rather one with a tight 90* bend. I'm going to have to see how much room I have to work with once I get it off.
I'm not sure, but I may start on it tonight after work. We'll see. I'll try to take some photos once I get it torn down.

The hose looks like it's going to be a pain to deal with at th rear of the motor. There can't be much room back there. even with the supercharger off. It's right next to the firewall. By the way, here's what the hose looks like.... (thanks Tbird6)

anyone know what the hell that hose is called? I can't seem to find it in the GTR workshop manual. I'll post the page in that manual once I find it. Thanks!

Oh - THAT hose. Yeah one of tbird6's best ever photos
This is where I wish I had JEPC (jag's parts system).
There was a long-running thread that included that hose needing fixing on the .co.uk forum where busterbulldog's STR blew what sounds like that hose. May be this thread http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtop...297025#p297025 or this one http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtop...290524#p290524
But the list of parts didn't appear to include the hose concerned. Here's the list anyway in case it helps:

seal-thermostat NCA2246BA 3.55
antifreeze red JLM 20972/3 28.93

I'm thinking it's that hose because the only other hoses carrying coolant that I'm aware of at the back of the motor are the heater core hoses that go into the firewall. Those don't appear to be leaking or have signs of them leaking. I started tearing the car down last night but didn't get too far yet.
Here's a page from our XK8/XKR parts diagrams, perhaps the hose is the same...look at a few of the items ONLY available for the XKR.

Also, we (xk8/r) forums have a Jaguar Parts Catalogue from microfiche (on PDF) in our FAQ section, that may also help you diagnose the parts, if this doesn't help.

I didn't look for the OP's part. Just opened long enough to save it.
All I have to add is...John, where in the he!! do you find this stuff....
Thanks a million for it though..You always seem to pull out some great files...

LOL - you're welcome. I'd kill the site if I posted them all at once
I'm sooo grateful to those who originally found/hosted/posted them. And Jaguar for making them (semi-)available. All I'm doing is passing them on. They're too useful to languish in dark unvisited corners of the net.

wow, thanks for the pages. That'll come in handy.
I started tearing down the car. I removed the inlet tubing to the throttle body. I removed the supercharger discharge plate that splits the air to the charge coolers. I'm working on removing the thermostat piece but some of the larger hoses are a pain(especially that passenger side one that goes to the radiator). I already removed the hoses to the intercoolers. I need to remove the bolts holding the thermostat piece but first have to remove the blower belt so that I can get some access to the lower bolt on the cast part of the thermostat housing(i believe there's one screw on the top and one on the bottom). I believe that those are torx. Anyone know what size they are? My set starts at 40 so I'll have to go to the store and pick some up tomorrow.
I also have to pick up a 1/2 breaker bar that is more shallow (the mounting part for a socket is too long). Once I get those done, then I'm probably about 2/3 the way there.

fortunately I haven't returned the one I was borrowing from my dad while shopping for a car. The vette is torn down too and awaiting paint. At least at this point I can see the supercharger. That's kind of encouraging. I need to get this done so that I can finally start to enjoy the car (after getting the blower ported).
Man, I said this before, but getting the blower belt off is a pain. It's tight in there. Do you guys have any tricks to get this thing off? I'm using the cheapo breaker bar from harbor freight and the part where a socket normally attaches to is a bit longer than ideal and is making it happy to squeeze it into the tensioner. I have to wedge it between a hose and the tensioner.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the cheapo one and the socket mounting point on the shorter piece is maybe a 1/4" too long to fit in there easily. After some coercing last night, I was able to get it to work. The blower belt is now off the car. Whew! Now today I have to do more removing of difficult to remove hoses and hard to reach bolts. I think I'm on step 20 of 29 in the instructions I downloaded off the net for blower removal. What fun!
wow guys, I'm really struggling with this repair. I got the belt off and the thermostat housing out of the way. I am now working at the back of the engine and it's near impossible to do unless you have 4 year old hands.
I'm struggling with the EGR. I don't know how in the hell I'm going to get the hoses off the EGR. I also am having trouble unhooking the two lines on the driver side of the throttle body area.
Anyone have any techniques for getting this done? I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. I'm close, but these last few things are really holding me up. I wish one of the techs on the forum lived closer! I'd definately pay someone to do this part!!!
Anyone know a jag tech in so cal?!
