Default Drops out of gear when being driven

HI I am new to the Jag forum's but not new to cars. So I am in need of some help. I have a 02 s-type 3.0 and it is very slow going from R to D like maybe 4 sec or more. some time's when you are driving it will all the sudden it will just rev like you put it in N (it will do that in 4th too not just D) it has no check engine lights on. I took the car to a transmission shop, and he told me the shifter was not sending a good signal, and he thought it would not hurt to get a new cable. any thought ?
O and Thanks for the help

There is a bracket on the LHS of the gearbox that the cable goes to, this bracket is held in place by 2x 8 or 10mm bolts which are known to come undone and even fall out !! Check these BEFORE you spend any money.

That's the 2003+ cars with ZF 6HP26. He has the Ford 5R55N, known for the shifter cable stretching sometimes.

I would also check and if not already done change the fluid. If it's low it's damaging the transmission and it will have odd shifting.

Yes, possibly the cable - but the cable can be adjusted - any trans shop should know that. But more importantly, like tbird6 already pointed out - check the trans fluid level and condition of fluid. If you have owned the car w/o getting the trans fluid changed - I would consider doing it quickly.

One more thought on the 5R55N trans - check the trans cooling lines that are above the front valiance panel. Those lines are known for leaking fluid in small amounts over time lowering the fluid to the point of internal trans damage....

Just my $0.02

Thanks for all the replays. The trans shop did drop the pan and told me the transmission fluid was not low and looked good. but i dont think it has been flushed at lest not sens i have had it (80k miles). I did pull the center console and the two bolts where not lose. but I have not had time to give it an adjustment. Now I did notates that if I move the shifter up from Drive toward neutral just a little like say maybe an 1/2 inch or so (half way be twine Drive and neutral) the car will shift in to neutral. is that what your cars do ? sorry I have not done the adjustment yet I work 3 12hr and it happens to be me three day shift now :/

My advice from waaaaay down here, and having the same model as "her" car. Odometer is now 125000kms.

The trans in ours was "odd" at first. I have changed the fluid, by the simple drop and refill method, 4 times in 8 months, and 5000kms. Soon it will have the pan off and new filter, etc.

It had been serviced ONCE by the PO, and it was grubby to the eye.

Now, it shifts SWEET, and smooth.

It also does NOT come out of "D" until you are a lot closer to the "N" notch than you describe. I tested that earlier this PM whilst in the car, so I reckon you have cable adjustment issues, and I would rectify this as soon as humanly possible, as trans damage, due to slippage, can be heavy on your wallet.

A trans fluid drop and refill in about 1000miles will also do NO harm, as the new will be contaminated by now with the remaining fluid that simply cannot be drained.

There are TSBs to address the cable issues and the slow shift can be improved with the shifting ten times in and out of gear (I forget the learning procedure).

We got a message from Jaguar Tech line about the way to improve the slow engagement.
I think it is posted here somewhere.

Look for the S307 section of TSBs.

You're right - that 10 times stuff was posted quite recently but can't recall exactly who/when/etc.

OP - have a hunt as it may help and of course hunt through TSBs.

Yes, it is here... somewhere....

I believe the trans temp has to be above 180 deg F before doing the procedure in 10 second increments between each shift as follows:

P to R then R to P
P to N then N to P
R to D then D to R
R to D then D to R
N to D then D to N

Start with the R to D then D to R first - 10 times with 10 second rest period after each shift.

If you do it right it's a lengthy process but most times gets rid of that delay in shifting.

sorry it's been so long. I did the transmission cable adjustment, and it has been two days now, and it has not potted out of gear once So I think that was it. If it is I am sooooo happy But on a side note I am not happy with the Transmission shop, that I took the car to. The shop told me I need a new shifter and cable (I know the cable has stretched) and told me it would be $1100 :O and that is messed up when all it really needed was a good adjustment. Thanks you all !!!

Just one note. The bolts we are talking about are the 2 8mm ones you get to from under the car. Just make sure they are snug. If you want a drop of loc-tite blue will keep them in place.
