Default Dtc activation button ???

I have read on the internet the TRIP button usually starts the DTC readings and usually its a stalk trip button but on my 2000 3.0 V6 the trip button is simply on the dash. If I hold it down and then turn on the ignition, there are no readings or system check:

- So what button do I hold down then?
- Is this hidden DTC menu available on my model?
- what could I be doing wrong?

Thank you for your help.

Snags are:

1. ETM does not show current DTCs. Instead it shows what might kindly be called complete garbage DTCs.

2. Early S-Types don't have it.

Get a proper tool - they're cheap and report current data.

Thank you JagV8, it appears I have an early s-type, I will look into the pricing of an OB-II reader.

I will start research which OBD-II reader to buy, I guess that all read the code the same? The knowledge is in the code number, non of the units are actually going to give more advice than just a code number right? Does anyone suggest any certain brand here in the USA? Thank you.

There's a (big, well, huge) thread if you look.

Cheap or costly and the whole car but you get to read more to understand...

I have an icarsoft i930 but it is said that it does not work on all cars but it does read all the modules on mine.

I also have autoenginity tool with the enhanced jaguar packet. They were selling the older tool on ebay which they told me would work on cars to 2004. The jaguar enhanced packet is expensive but I find it to be very good.

If you just want to read the engine codes then you can buy an elm 327 I use an usb version as I have found them to be more reliable along with a French programme.

It all depends on how much you are able to work on the car and how much money you want to spend.
